Reasons why Martin is convinced that Jonathan Sims can’t be an Onega and therefore must be a Beta:

Omega subvocals are notoriously chatty. Jon is silent. Omega scents are considered a boon, a positive, a gift to be shared, a tool for them to use in modulating the emotional tone of any room they’re in. Jon militantly hides his. Omegas have packs. They need pack to thrive and be healthy. Jon has none, as far as Martin knows. And Omegas have heats every season.

But Jon has never taken heat leave.

Not even for a day.

And last but certainly not least, Martin cannot have a crush on an Omega who he also cares deeply for. He just can’t.

Jon cannot be an Omega, because Martin is fucked if he is.
