some plot thoughts: in both recordings jon listened to, there was a bit about sources of ignition inside the archives.
- in the gertrude tape, she’s talking about using a gas main and petrol to burn down the archives. leitner mentions her “pyromaniac streak.”
- and in the birthday party tape, tim makes a whole show out of bringing matches into the archives and lighting candles, freaking jon out.
jon wants to know why jonah sent the tapes, and martin claims he’s gloating. but what if jonah wasn’t the one who sent the tapes? because there’s a common theme in the two we heard, and it’s not a theme that would bode well for the archives or, presumably, jonah.
and in general, what if the tape recorders mysteriously clicking on isn’t actually a beholding thing? like it’s obvious why we assume it is, but important objects showing up mysteriously and machines switching on without anyone pressing the button sounds very web-like to me. anyway, that would be an intense twist.
