if i was simon fairchild during the eyepocalypse, i’d be so pissed. they took my fucking sky away. there’s a stupid eye blocking my beautiful sky. and i’m supposed to be okay with this. fuck you magnus
au where jane prentiss can just resurrect john amherst style. let her be a true zombie girl. the only way to defeat her is to just kind of contain her somewhere like an actual bug. maybe someone is actually secretly very glad she’s back. consider it
they hold hands by just gently touching their hands together every once in a while, as if scared they’re gonna forget the other’s there if they don’t.
also sometimes when they do this, a few of jane’s worms will just kind of. crawl up jonah’s sleeve. this is a form of flirting
jonah is a massive literature nerd, so obviously he has a wide collection of old and new classics. jane likes to read these books to her worms sometimes. their favourite thus far is harlan ellison’s i have no mouth and i must scream.
jane paints! used to be more into realism, but after becoming, her art became mostly abstract depictions of grotesque situations. she always makes sure to add a few eyes onto the canvas at the very start, so jonah can watch her work from the perspective of the painting itself.
neither of them are big on petnames, but jonah sometimes uses vague metaphors and allegories to talk about jane. it sounds like nonsense to everyone else. one time, rosie asked him why he was so happy all of a sudden, and he just smiled and said “i think…i have an infestation.”
“passive suicidality and a dangerous amount of apathy regarding oneself and one’s peers” nooo lol that’s just called being literally simon fairchild from the magnus archives

“incredibly detatched from one’s own identity, often defining oneself based on events or groups” and that’s just being literally mike crew. you’re welcome
jonah magnus is a butch but like, not the same genre of butch as me (my genre being somewhere between a farmer and adam sandler). he’s like a business butch. he’s like the type of butch who wears suits and button-downs and disturbingly clean shoes. now. jane prentiss is a femme, but like. scary femme. torn skirts and grimy long hair. the type of aesthetics that make you go “oh she is going to wreck me. so badly” but you also kind of want her to?? yeahg.
strangest of my discoveries about myself by far. i associate specific tropes in music with specific tma characters. like specific things that happen in music sometimes, e.g. instrument solos and shit like that. somehow in my mind i can assign tma characters those

all im really saying is that fake-out choruses are so martin blackwood. drum solos are so jude perry. lyric repetition is so jonah magnus.

gertrude/jonah where both of them absolutely refuse to fall asleep when the other is around. gertrude barely sleeps in general, she has too many enemies. she taught herself to wake up reflexively after like 30 minutes of sleeping, just in case. my headcanon is that the eye’s effects make jonah’s dreams extremely vivid and longer than natural (he doesn’t dream as much as he just watches someone else’s thoughts while asleep), so he can’t really predict how long he’ll be asleep for, and that leaves him far too vulnerable for his comfort.
i strongly believe that both of them are wayy too stubborn and distrustful to ever willingly fall asleep close to each other.
the thing is that if gertrude did fall asleep in jonah’s vicinity, he’d be too smug about it to actually try and kill her. he’d just be like “hahA i did it!! i caught gertrude robinson off-guard!!”. but if jonah fell asleep in gertrude’s vicinity, she’d just be split between “i need to kill him now, this is my chance” and “he’s. kind of cute like that. ohno”
One of my favorite and most interesting thing about Jon is that he sorts peoples actions into Human and Monster
To him, the actions of monsters cannot be forgiven, as seen with Daisy, Helen and Jared
But along with that, the actions of humans always have an excuse, like Basira and his grandmother
The most prime example of this is with Jurgen where, prior to his meeting with him, he wrote Jurgen off as evil and when he did meet with him he dubbed Jurgen as just a spoiled confused child
And what makes this more interesting is how he perceives himself as a monster. He sees himself as unforgivable and monstrous, even when hes just doing what he needs to survive
He forgives people who hurt him, like his grandmother who neglected and obviously resented him and Basira, who threatened to kill him if he so much as stepped out of line, because they are human. They are people against a monster
The only time he doesnt blame himself for something is when he can blame another monster, like in mag 146, Threshold, where he blames the Web, another, different monster
And what makes his mentality so much more devastating is that many avatars, the monsters in his mind, are shown to not often be in complete control, whereas humans do have entire control
Avatars have to spread fear and hurt or they themself will die. In more explicit cases of lack of control Jon himself has stated he often doesnt realize what hes done until after its happened and Daisy becomes completely mindless by the end of the series to the point of only recognizing two things, a hunt and Basira (daisy also sorts people into monster and human, but thats because of hunt reasons)
Humans dont have these restrictions, humans are entirely free to do what they please, with the only con being they are significantly weaker than avatars
When Basira threatens him, she is doing it entirely through her own choice, whereas when Jon hunts statement givers he is doing it partly because hes forced into that position. But he will still forgive and rationalize Basiras actions while condemning and scrutinize his own, because she is the human and he is the monster
jane “do everything you can to be understood and end up a monster” prentiss and jonah “do everything you can to be more than a human and end up a vessel” magnus. you know where i’m going with this
jonah magnus is hiding a deeply disgusting soul underneath several intricate layers of pretense and i want someone like oh, i don’t know, maybe the avatar of everything that burrows deep within your skin to just. tear him open idk. force him to confront the reality of being a parasite. imagine devoting your life to the concept of seeing, and therefore knowing exactly how gross you are at your core, but the first time someone else sees it, all of it, the repulsive truth of your entire existence, they decide that this too is loveable. this too is worthy of affection. not because you’re special, but rather because she has devoted her life to all things rotten and dirty and corrupted.

and you are nothing if not corrupted.
literally like 3 out of 6 of my fics about them are just this. genuinely an enlightening experience to just write something downright disgusting and not feel bad about it
imagine jonah seeing jane show up to the institute for the first time to make her statement. in the very midst of becoming, confused and afraid and already too far gone. maybe he remembered what that felt like, even after 200 years. to slowly lose yourself to something that feels so right. i’m sure that’s something you don’t easily forget.
and then imagine him seeing her again, as a full avatar. oh, he’s been keeping an eye on her, of course he has. but to actually see her now, fully consumed by the corruption, a true monster. hostile and inhuman and attacking his institute.
i imagine maxwell rayner kind of despised the modern day. light pollution, better lamps, all that making people less and less likely to end up in the dark. i also imagine jonah magnus fucking adores the modern day, because the fear of being watched has only gotten stronger and stronger as technology advances. the first time someone went on the internet and was scared that they were being spied on probably felt so good he came.
and simon is truly neutral on the topic because. well. people fall just as much as they used to.
i think i have finally pinned down my interpretation of jonah magnus as a villain. and it’s that he really wants to be a dramatic overtly villainous villain but he’s too attached to his corporate persona. like something about the way he talks, even when he’s having a villain monologue, is just so. ordinary. professional. this monologue could’ve been an email
he wants to be the common fanon interpretation of himself but he has been Founder And Head Of The Magnus Institute for 200 years. c'mon guys. he’s the personification of paperwork. poor thing doesn’t know how to be anything except a fucking manager even when he’s actively bringing forth the apocalypse

literally the whole time you’re like “surely the facade will be dropped” but no he’s just actually like that. well jon i understand your hesitancy to devote yourself to an eldritch god of knowledge but once you see this powerpoint presentation i made,
underappreciated aspect of jonelias is that, at least in my mind, elias would 100% be the world’s clingiest, neediest boyfriend ever if him and jon were actually dating. not a fan of martin’s sudden distant and avoidant behavior in s4? get ready for the absolute opposite. he’d be knocking on the door to the archives 24/7 going “jon?? archivist??? joonn??? why aren’t you responding to my emails jon :( ???”
like that one textpost that’s like “i noticed you were paying attention to someone other than me. why is that”
hi. does anybody wanna have me talk at them about the two different aspects of the vast that simon fairchild and mike crew represent. i have my talking points prepared
hi. does anybody wanna have me talk at them about the two different aspects of the vast that simon fairchild and mike crew represent. i have my talking points prepared
hello yes hi
YES HAHA ok so.
in my mind, the vast has two main aspects: space and movement.
simon fairchild absolutely represents the space aspect. the world is so large, and you are so small. it’s the fear of your own insignificance in the face of an uncaring universe. that’s why his statement is all about, as the title of the episode suggests, the big picture. his backstory is based more on emotions than actual actions; it’s far less about what happened to him, and far more about what he felt when it did. he felt the entire universe embrace him.
mike crew represents the movement aspect. terminal velocity, something too fast to be seen, an unstoppable force beyond your control. a lightning doesn’t hit you out of malice. it hits you because that’s the nature of it, and there’s nothing you can do to stop it once the movement has begun. his backstory is much more focused on actions he took to try and control things that were beyond his control. searching for something to try and make yourself more, and therefore safer in a universe you know does not care if it hurts you.
hm. wait i’m cooking again. s1 jon finds out about janelias and is naturally utterly confused, disgusted, and honestly very justifiably upset.
“wait wait so all this time you were quite literally sleeping with the enemy. and didn’t even think for one second that that was something i’d want to know” “really, jon, i have no idea why you think this is such a big deal.” “i- ??? i give up!!! i am quitting. no more of this”
“mach you should be WORKING!!!” uuhhhjjj unfortunately unable to due to. well i am picturing lena kelley and jonah magnus sharing a cake and frankly that’s far more important
brutal pipe murder except everything’s the exact same but on his way out, elias slips comically on a puddle of blood and accidentally hits himself with the pipe. he doesn’t die or anything but he gets a mild nosebleed and the eye starts laughing at him
listen. i love bullying jonah magnus. its my favourite activity
oh my god. i fucking forgot that distracting elias was a genuine method of making sure he doesn’t spy on you. give him really complicated paperwork to make sure he doesn’t use his eldritch monster powers. “don’t worry guys i have a plan. [throws budgeting plans into the next room] GO FETCH”
right now i get the feeling that lena kelley is either the least in control boss of all time or just very very hands-off. like i could be easily proven wrong but um. love. your employees are secretly forcing you into a found family dynamic you did not agree to. one of them feels perfectly comfortable just straight up telling you she wants your job and She Will Get It. the new hire is already on his own little project. the IT guy is fucking haunted and you’re just like “yeah he’s like that lol”
but at the same time…klaus? “you don’t have what it takes”? she’s got something going on. it’s like there’s some kind of invisible line she’s drawn that i am suspecting will be crossed very soon. and then we will know. but for now we can only be a little confused by this apparent dichotomy of “damn girl does NOBODY respect you </3” and “damn girl. put the gun down”
wait no you’re so right. lena kelley lonelyeyes love child real
on the topic of aspec tma characters. i have IDEAS.
hm. bellusromantic allosexual elias. he definitely thinks about romance and is a casual enjoyer of it but doesn’t actually like anyone romantically and doesn’t actually want a romantic relationship. sex, however. always a possibility.
also aroallo gertrude. i believe she fucked like crazy and never got into a single relationship. i aspire to be like her
fraysexual frayromantic peter lukas. it makes narrative sense. could also make a case for lithsexual lithromantic, in his mind the least attractive thing someone can do is being attracted to him.
non-SAM aromantic simon fairchild. he’s never even heard of a split attraction model. lol what’s that. who care.
oh my god. i fucking forgot that distracting elias was a genuine method of making sure he doesn’t spy on you. give him really complicated paperwork to make sure he doesn’t use his eldritch monster powers. “don’t worry guys i have a plan. [throws budgeting plans into the next room] GO FETCH”
he gets really comically excited about the most boring tasks in the world. starts spinning around in his chair and giggling happily like omg yay :3 i love this job so much ^_^ i can’t wait to do what i’ve been doing for 200 years now: meaningless corporate nonsense!!
tim walks in on him once and immediately starts a scientific study on this because what the fuck. there’s no way he actually enjoys this…right?
he experiments by trying to take over a few tasks for him like “don’t worry boss i’ll handle that” and elias is immediately like “NO !!!!! my paperwork >:(”
