mark “mars” oliver - an endless rollercoaster ride. the speed slows down and gets fast again unpredictably, the track goes higher than you can even picture, and you can never quite trust the integrity of the ride. it makes strange noises, creaks and snaps that you can’t really see, and was your cart always twisted at this strange angle? you’re convinced you’re going to fall off, surely, any second now.
rachel prado - a farm. you’ve worked for months, endured harsh weather and endless hours of physical labour, planting seeds and feeding the cattle. and now it’s finally time to eat. god, you’re so hungry. the hunger bites at your stomach and makes you feel as though your chest is going to cave in, but when you walk outside, it’s all gone. the field is on fire. the cattle are dead and rotting away before your eyes. you fall to your knees, and weep. you will starve.
samis - an apartment. the walls are thin, and you can hear people outside, but you are not allowed to leave. you can hear them talking about you. or, more accurately, people like you. they despise people like you. they talk for hours together, just outside your wall, about how they’d never end up in the situation you’re in, because they’re just better than you like that. it’s been months since you saw another living soul. but if you go outside now, you will be met with their judgemental gazes, the insults and slurs that fall so easily from their lips, you fear they might even physically assault you if they see you. better to just stay inside. after all, you don’t want to be an outsider.

mars is american, specifically from georgia. he’s not very attached to that background, and he’s lived in manchester england for almost two decades now. his accent is some kind of mixture of the two by now, most americans assume he’s british but brits can tell he’s american, that type of deal.
rachel is half-brazilian on her mother’s side, half-british on her father’s. she’s lived in liverpool basically all their life, but still regularly visits brazil and is fluent in portuguese. their identity as a mixed latino is important to them, and has affected her life mostly in childhood.
samis is non-human, but technically japanese because the specific genre of fear they feed on existed most primarily in japan in the form of hikikomoris after the second world war. they don’t exactly “live” anywhere, but the first place they existed in was yokohama, when enough of that specific fear had accumulated. it’s unknown why they appeared there specifically. maybe they just liked being close to the sea. they can speak any language they want, but they have a certain level of attachment to the japanese language.

rachel’s is probably the video game sally face. she replays it at least once every year. travis is their favourite character, naturally. they can play the main theme on the guitar!
samis only really engages with niche, taboo, uncomfortable media. the type of stuff you only find when you have nothing else to do but scroll on your computer all day and night, and you’ve got a bit too prominent of a morbid curiosity. they don’t actually like any of it. one thing they genuinely do enjoy, though, is the works of junji ito. their favourites are tomie, no longer human, and tombs.

i am once again losing my fucking mind over the concept of one-sided jonhelen. helen says to jon “she liked you.” and what that really means is “she made me like you”. the distortion inherits feelings, we know it inherited michael’s anger. imagine being both the water and the blood bleeding into it, you feel yourself dissolving into someone else but you are the someone else you’re dissolving into. and then you are one, and you have feelings that were never meant to be yours.
just as michael’s hatred of gertrude made him terrorize jon when he was the distortion, i like to think that helen’s love for jon made her follow him around the way she did. she wanted to be around him, and she couldn’t understand why.
there’s also the lack of dignity of it all. going from trying to kill someone to being hopelessly in love with them within a moment. being essentially forced into that unrequited love, and knowing that any second, if they just looked in the right direction, they’d know. a being of pure delusion falling in love with a being of infinite knowledge and exposed secrets. the only person capable of uncovering the truth about her is also the person she’s in love with. she continues to willingly put herself into that situation where her very being could be torn into at any second.

she embraced her nature as soon as she became the distortion, with shockingly little resistance. because she doesn’t care!! she’ll always do what she needs to to live!!! and she’s upset that others won’t do the same. because that makes her feel like a bad person (which she is.)
she constantly wants jon to give into his true nature because that’s what she did. and if he continues to prove that she didn’t need to, and that you can be an avatar and still not lose yourself, she’ll have to face the fact that she just. didn’t try hard enough. or that she was somehow inherently worse than jon from the start, even before Becoming. which she probably was!!! she’s such a “you’re not better than me! stop acting like you’re better than me!” type of character. i feel like her and jude perry are pretty similar in that; they just present it in different ways.
there’s also my little headcanon that she was always an excellent liar. it probably started out innocent enough, but at some point in her life, almost everything she said was a lie to some degree. the entirety of “helen richardson” was a persona she was putting up, and she stopped considering herself a real person. she was a facade with nothing underneath. the first time she felt like a real person in years was when the distortion marked her, because that fear was much more real than any of the “joy” or “pride” she’d felt. basically, for almost her entire life, helen richardson had a severe case of imposter syndrome and undiagnosed depersonalization-derealization disorder. she kind of always belonged to the spiral.

the thing is that adelard dekker is one of those completely offline people that makes you wish you were also offline. he has a natural, non-internet poisoned charisma about him. alice is absolutely walking out of that interaction going “i have to delete twitter immediately” and this is why adelard dekker is a true hero.

On my current “relisten of random Magnus Archives episodes” I got to the s2 episode where the supplemental is everyone throwing Jon a “Stop Stalking Us on Suspicion of Murder” intervention party.
And they manage to convince Jon is wasn’t any of them because the cleaned-up CCTV footage exonerates them.

This is wild because Jon leaps right to suspecting the tape has been doctored. “I mean, the CCTV is so corrupted that the police can’t just use it immediately, and then they happen to finish restoring it just when I start really digging into the murder!? And if it was an option, why not clean it up when she first disappeared!?” (Episode 65)
And Leitner even says the same thing in Episode 80, that Elias could have potentially interfered with the CCTV. “Simple mechanical eyes? In his place of power? You think he can’t control everything they see? Assuming such interference wouldn’t ruin them beyond recovery, of course.”
But neither of them just consider that maybe during the time Elias claimed to discover the body, he was actually committing the murder first.
Which always led me to think that Elias wasn’t down there for very long, before coming back up and calling the police. In Episode 65, Tim says “You’ve spent a month staring at that footage – double-checking every moment, timing every tea break, looking at me like I somehow staged it,” so we know Jon was very concerned about timing and would have presumably been suspicious if Elias was down there for a long time when he was supposedly just discovering the body. Jon—after a month of careful checking—came to the conclusion that none of the people shown on tape had enough time to commit the murder while they were in the Archives before they reappeared on tape, which renewed his conviction that the murderer had used the tunnels.
This is exactly the kind of addition I needed, from someone who remembers all the hyper-specific details I do not remember.
This leads me to the ONLY conclusion I can arrive at which makes sense to me, which is that Eliajonah–as an avatar of The Eye–is able to manipulate how much people pay attention to him. And every time Jon looks over at him he’s just the picture of doey-eyed “who? me? wittle old me?”
Jon voice: “Supplemental. It’s not adding up. I still suspect it could be Tim, if he manipulated the tapes. Or Sasha, if she manipulated time. Or Martin, because I hate him. Or even Elias, who went down into the tunnels at the exact day and time Gertude was murdered while saying ‘I gotta kill Gertrude Robinson’–”

The thing is, when it comes to the distortion, I am more drawn to Michael, BUT Helen is infinitely more interesting as a character, and there’s so much more to analyse and discuss about her I feel. Michael is fun, quirked up twink an’ all that, but he’s a very surface level character, kiiinda boring if you try to discuss him at any length. Helen is fascinating!
I am of the opinion that Michael is a cooler character pre-distortion, and Helen is a cooler character post-distortion. Like the statement of Michael Shelley going to The Spirals ritual fucked me up, and the lingering affects of his previous character is interesting. But Helen is really cool, she's fascinating, funny, clever, hilarious and her motivations are really interesting. Before that she was a nobody real estate agent, and I believe Helen said she was a bit of a tory (I can't really remember I might be mixing up fanfiction for canon, it's been awhile since I listened to TMA)
valid take, personally i am extremely fascinated with helen richardson too. i really like the possible conversations to be had about her and the whole moral debate at the very core of tma. was she a worse person than jon for giving into avatarhood and embracing it fully? she took to being the distortion a lot more easily than i’d imagine michael shelley did, so what made her different from him? was she an inherently worse person from the start, or was she just unfortunate?
my personal interpretation of pre-distortion helen is just very. apathetic. lazy when it comes to morals. she took what she was taught as a child, and never bothered to challenge or deconstruct those ideals. she always took the easy route in life, and deep down, she resented herself for it, but never enough to actually change for the better.
she was an excellent and excessive liar, and probably the first person to experience completely correct and justified imposter syndrome. deep down, she never even felt like a real person.
the distortion is a more honest version of helen richardson than helen richardson herself ever could have been.

ok so one of my headcanons is that being an avatar affects your gender identity in really interesting ways. the flesh twists and molds your gender, the dark mutes and obscures your gender, the corruption degrades and desecrates your gender.
adding onto that, jane prentiss goes by she/it, john amherst goes by he/it. manuela dominguez goes by she/they, maxwell rayner goes by they/them. jared hasn’t really thought about it, but is pretty much fine with anything.

ok this isn’t really a headcanon but i need to say it. they make for such a beautiful silhouette. on first look, it’s all very traditional; one figure in a clean suit, the other in a red dress. but the closer you look, the more fucked up both of them look.
