i think one of the funniest things about me picking up and finishing the magnus archives after i thought i’m abounding was the switch of my opinion on jonathan sims cause like
i get passionate about pathetic men alright. they can’t just sway me with simple whimpers or sad past or whatever, there have to be LAYERS of angst and unresolved issues and poor coping mechanisms. not some cheap corny bait. the writer has to get passionate about one’s suffering alright
and for the first ~100 episodes i was like heh. he’s not all that. sure he is a bit of a loser but i’ve seen better ones
and now after listening to the second half of the series he’s one of my all time favorites characters now patheticness aside he’s just fucking top my man my goat my wet cat wife and babygirl like i’m so fucking sorry for ever doubting you jonathan sims and i say this both to character and the writer
i’m thinking some final thoughts on jonmartin as a ship and i have so many reflections
relationship written so well the crowd cannot decide whether to call it realistic or toxic
you know how people would sometimes say love is actually more about choosing rather than feeling
and i think that is the case with them
in episode 190, laverne says this
it isn’t about them, of course, and i’m not even sure whether it was meant to be a parallel, maybe not, but to me it a bit is
they’re not a fairytale scenario. they don’t believe they’re meant to be together in a deeper, soulmateism sense (or at least martin doesn’t, but i think jon at least gets his point).
the whole ‘it’s a pure coincidence we even got together’ is very true. it probably wouldn’t happen if some things unfolded differently
and it gets me to how what connected them aren’t even feelings. of course, feelings are there, no doubt, they’ve fallen for each other - but feelings have their limit, are unstable, are changing, and are subjective, and ultimately, it isn’t enough to get you through a literal damn apocalypse (and a nasty, mind twisting kind of one too mind you), cause in these circumstances they get challenged on daily basis. you’ll get angry at each other, you’ll have to make painful choices, possibly hurt each other. they’re not enough to make a solid foundation, and you need a solid foundation in times like these
so you know what can get you through all that. what can make that foundation. free fucking human will. the ability to CHOOSE to put your trust in someone, the ability to CHOOSE that you’re sticking with them, BELIEVING in them
i think they’re both in a bit of a disbelief they got together after everything that went down and all their differences, but maintaining it is like a big fuck you to all the cruelty around them, and so choose to maintain that. and it’s also a lot of a 'as long as you choose me i’ll keep on choosing you too’ scenario too, that’s why they reassure each other so often, that hey, i still love you despite everything, so don’t give up on me
and it works, because they have a ton of trust in each other (that’s a whole another topic man their mutual trust is like the cery core of their relationship long before they even get together i’d say), so when one says i love you, the other believes them
so yeah it’s a bit of love in a feeling, hormones and brain chemistry sense, a bit of love in the. 'wherever you go i go’, choice sense, and a bit of love in the ultimate trust with whole life sense
ok so do you think jon spent extra time choosing an outfit to go to kill jonah and ascend to godhood cause he was like damn whatever i choose now i might get stuck in for an eternity
ok so do you think jon spent extra time choosing an outfit to go to kill jonah and ascend to godhood cause he was like damn whatever i choose now i might get stuck in for an eternity
alternatively. do you think jon would put on martin’s shirt so he can keep a part of him forever
nothing compares to listening to tma for the first time and realising jonmartin are going to be Canon canon not just exaggerated by the fandom or heavily implied
one of the scenes i feel like we as a community don’t talk enough about is jon giving this ant guy a promotion in mag 184. easily one of the top five funniest moments in the series to me
jon perfoms a jesus-tier miracle, manages to use his evil powers for something (debatably, but still relatively) good, a huge moment for him, and the two reactions he gets are basically:
“this is only a slightly less terrible fate than being tormented by thousands of ants for the rest of the eternity forever”
and
“what?…. oh okay so that can happen… SURE i guess… whatever… why am i even surprised… can we go now”
