He can be unreserved and straightforward in his affections because he’s just a pet. Just a good boy. Doesn’t have to play the delicate balancing act of too much/not enough. He doesn’t have to be romantic, and the attention he receives from his owners isn’t necessarily romantic in the classical sense either. He has a clear role to play in the relationship, and so does his partner. Doesn’t have to worry that he’s loving them wrong because he knows how he’s supposed to (and it’s always been so much easier than the hearts and the flowers and the declarations that are just the right amount of sappy, he’s never understood any of those things). Doesn’t have to worry that he’s doing something wrong because he’s be scolded. Be punished. Because he knows what to do already anyway.
