I felt this weeks episode lacked substance and they’re rolling the plot very thin to keep ~suspence~ rather than moving it forward - the show will suffer
hmm i see where youre coming from but i personally disagree with you. i think episodes are perfectly enjoyable even when they arent stuffed full of plot and people are just expecting more plot now because we’re reaching the climax when a big percentage of tma eps have very little plot outside of the statement itself, yknow? this weeks ep was interesting from a character building standpoint (god knows ive seen a lot of people wanting info on og elias) and from a just pure horror standpoint. it felt like an early season ep and i liked it! that said i agree on some level, this was my least fav ep from act 3 thus far (mostly because i was never super invested in og elias anyway)
but ultimately like. i trust jonny and i trust his narrative and i liked it :]
This episode’s statement follows both the trend of “the domains are a reflection of Jon,” but also the more specific “the domains are a message to Jon.” And as we’ve drawn near the end, that message over and over has been to just give in and give up. TMA 189 Peers had the minister who backed down and settled into the feast rather than speak up. TMA 194 had…well, everyone disagrees on what exactly that message was, but it definitely was about a cycle of inevitability and being unable to escape what you’re trying to flee from, and Jon took it as an attempted argument from the Eye.
And here in TMA 195…wow.
I see Jon and Martin’s entire journey in this statement. Swimming towards the surface, towards the only hope of relief, trying to escape the looming dread that the end of the journey will have no hope at all.
Deep down, in the icy depths, you could imagine… you could hope. The darkness hides terrible things, but it could also hide salvation.
But it goes even further back for Jon himself:
You have been drowning as long as you can remember, and to invite the impossible cold into yourself, through your lungs and into your core, will bring no end to it, no relief. So you hold on. You hold out as long as you can, ignoring the agony, straining against the pressing darkness that has consumed you, and that implores you to consume it in return.
That….that’s season 4 in a nutshell. You have been drowning for as long as you remember. The constant temptation to just give in, to make things easier, just like Helen kept coaxing him to do. Holding on despite the agony, despite not having any real hope.
And then, at last, the invitation:
You choke it down, and slip once again below the surface. Into the concealing darkness of the freezing waters below, and you leave behind the nothing that waits above.
Over and over, the invitation to just give in. Fit into the place the Eye has made for Jon. Stop fighting, stop clinging to the hope he can make things better or save anyone.
I am noting that it’s risky to see the statements as foreshadowing: we know that they’re based on fear rather than truth, and Jon has interpreted them as direct attempts at influence from the Eye. While this statement could be interpreted that there is no hope, in the context, I feel the more immediate meaning is: you are feeling hopeless. You haven’t felt real hope since before you can remember. You should give in. There is nothing to push forward for.
