maybe there are martins who slipped into the lonely during a gcse maths exam and never returned and maybe there are jons who knock on mr spiders door at eight and martins who were web all along and jons who were never drawn to the eye and martins who were archivists and jons who were not.

and maybe there are martins who never find love and maybe there are jons who marry georgies and martins who settle down and have children and jons who never date at all.

and maybe there are martins who are invisible and whisper in the ears of those alone and maybe there are jons who seek out fear without a hint of guilt and feed their masters greedily and martins who reek of apocalypse and nightmares and jons who wear other peoples skins and martins who hunt and claw and bite and kill and jons who revel in the choking depths of mud and earth and martins who are monsters and jons who are monsters too.

and maybe there are martins who couldn’t kill jons and maybe there are jons who wouldn’t let themselves be killed.

and maybe there are martins who find jons, and maybe there are jons who find martins. maybe there are martins and jons who are in love, who get married, who settle down with a white picket fence and a dog, who break up after five months, who have a messy divorce with drawn out court proceedings, who don’t fit together and who do, who complete each other wholly, who ruin each other’s lives, who never meet but make eye contact once on a train and feel a fleeting moment of… something.

maybe there was one martin and one jon. maybe there are infinite.

but there was a martin and there was a jon and maybe they are dead and maybe they are alive and maybe they are safe or running for their lives or kayaking across an infinite lake but most of all they are together. one jon and one martin who found each other and scraped and clawed and fought to be right for each other and took years to be the kind of people who worked together and had no time to be together at all until the end. who knows where they’ve ended up. but goodbye, and good luck.

i still had thoughts about this concept, so i wrote a fic about it (linked under fic)
