The Sharkivist is In

For day five of @tmaappreciationweek, “what if” Jon has one of those plush blåhaj sharks from ikea

Read it on Ao3

The shark was sitting in his desk chair when Jon opened his office door. Actually sitting in it, with a “hello my name is” sticker stuck to it with “Jonathan Swims, Head Sharkivist” written on it in black marker. At first, Jon was annoyed, he had no idea where to put the shark as his office was already too crowded with filing cabinets and boxes of miscellaneous statements. Then a small, petty voice inside him whispered that he should just… go along with whatever scheme that the others had hatched. So Jon turned around and walked out of his office, sat down at one of the unoccupied desks, and pulled out a book from his bag.

There was a collective muttering from his assistants and Jon did his best to hide his smile. Tim was the first to speak up, his expression cheerful but there was a definite glint to his eyes. “What’re you doing out here, boss?”

Jon continued to read for a few seconds- for dramatic effect of course- before glancing up at Tim. “Oh, sorry. Were you talking to me?”

“Yeah,” to Jon’s delight the assistants seemed confused. “Why aren’t you in your office?”

“It would appear,” it was getting harder to keep from smiling. “I’ve been demoted. Someone else was in my office, and he seems to be doing a rather good job, so…” With a shrug, Jon returned to the book. “I guess I’ll wait to see what he wants me to do.”

Day 5 of @tmaappreciationweek : Somewhere Else

I’m rearranging my prompts a little bit here, because today is the actual one-year anniversary since the podcast ended (wild!) and I wanted to get this fic out today in dedication to that. Please enjoy!

~

It is 3 o’clock in the morning, Somewhere Else, and Martin can hear Jon pacing in the kitchen.

written for @tmaappreciationweek for the prompt ‘somewhere else’! a continuation of it will be this, always but can be read as a standalone. CW for mentions of Jon’s past traumas (including non-consensual touching, canon-typical worms, canon-typical flesh content, knife violence, spiders, and claustrophobia), wound/injury analogies, and fear of abandonment.

Jon is tired. It drags at his eyelids, blurs his vision, makes his hands shake ever so slightly where they turn another page in his book. His wedding ring glints very faintly in the light from the lamp. He used to read without the light, squinting at the moonlit pages and holding the book so close to his face that his nose nearly brushed the paper. But Martin is a heavy sleeper—the kind who needs to set twenty alarms five minutes apart in the mornings to get up and who sleeps deep into the afternoon when given the chance—and he’d given Jon a look as he passed him the paracetamol for his eye strain headache and told him to just use the lamp.

“They say lying down with your eyes closed can be restful, even if you don’t sleep,” Martin said a moment after, in that pointed way he does when he wants Jon to learn to take care of himself but doesn’t want to outright say it.

“I know,” Jon said. He did not say that, if he lay down and closed his eyes, he likely wouldn’t have much trouble falling asleep at all.

He just wouldn’t … stay asleep. Best to avoid that inevitability as long as possible, he’s decided.

Looking at the page, it is hard not to wonder what part of the skin it is. Jon thinks if he were to skin someone… well, the skin from the back would make more sense. Or the torso. There is nothing here to guide him: no nipple, no pleats that would indicate a belly button, no bumps where bones might have stretched the fabric once. Just, a smooth dead texture, and ink.
