I will say it again even though everyone following me has heard me say this like a broken record; JM’s brand of toxicity could be a lot more interesting if underneath it they were compatible at all. They don’t get each other’s jokes…

ur so right but would love a citation

@poeticsoup A more extensive selection will (probably) be in order once I actually relisten, but these are the quotes I have on hand:

ARCHIVIST
(immediate, darker) He's inside the Panopticon. The tower, far above the world.

MARTIN
(joke) That one?

ARCHIVIST
(misses/doesn't care for it) Yes.ALT
MARTIN
(overlapping) I know! I know, I just— (bracing exhale) Look, I j, just—don't want to get burned, all right? It's, it's like my least favourite pain ever.

ARCHIVIST
Is that—a joke?

MARTIN
(a bit faster, a bit shaky) No, no, okay? I, I legitimately hate burns, alright? They're, they're awful, and they scar horribly, and they're just—it—it just makes me sick; I, I hate it. Hate it!ALT
ARCHIVIST
(teasing) Methinks the spider dost protest too much.

[MARTIN STOPS WALKING]

MARTIN
John—

ARCHIVIST
(jeez) Joking! Just joking.ALT

I fucking LOVE Jonah’s response to Jon’s question of whether he’s still human. It refuses to give a straight definition of humanity because he’s a chad who understands nuances and complexities. It includes Jonah himself but not what Jonah aspires to be (can still die). It’s subtle manipulation by placing Jon’s will in his hands (your will is still your own, mostly) when in MAG 160 he explicitly takes it away (your own rotten luck). It infuriatingly answers a question with a question with a tone of voice like he’s disappointed Jon even asked such a pedestrian question. King.

I have to stop the rituals from ever succeeding -> someone is going to succeed, and everyone will suffer anyway, so why should I be among the sufferers? -> even if nobody succeeds, I will never be free of pain and death and fear in this human condition. I am willing to sacrifice everyone to craft my ritual, even if they wouldn’t fall victim to the fears otherwise.

Low empathy Jon is so delightful.

I think it’s genuinely insane that near-universal Elias fanon is just “yeah, he’s gay and homophobic, like he calls you slurs except he’s gay. He’s really flamboyant too, just so you can quickly tell he’s evil. No, yeah, all that time he spent under the radar is irrelevant; it’s of paramount importance that he walks into a room and you immediately know that he’s queer and evil. He gets the money for his institute by trading sexual favours for money for the Lukas family, has been doing this for generations. This is all to emphasise that he’s evil, you know; this is why I give him these evil traits. Wait, why are you calling me homophobic?”

itchyeye:

i think the fandomification of every tma character’s visual design is grating for the same primary reason, which is that this is a modern academic setting with characters who are generally in their mid 30s or older working in a formal professional environment and everyone draws them like a gaggle of freshman year theater majors who spend 9 - 12 hours a day online OR like they are closet cosplaying homestuck villains

Lonelyeyes as a ship only works if they’re both doing it specifically because Jonah doesn’t give a fuck about Peter’s feelings. This isn’t “Jonah is an evil gay whore” again this is “Jonah entered this ‘relationship’ (if you can even call it that) because he knew it would feed both of them to watch Peter be miserable and neglected”

elias-rights:

I’m noticing a hint of a phenomenon where new listeners, untouched by years of fandom arguing and fanon, listen to Elias and Jon interact and call it (correctly) kind of gay. Nature might be healing.
