Here’s some brutal pipe murder, since I’m not getting any other art done. This was actually just an excuse for me to draw some neon green eyes. Can you tell I was into Nickelodeon cartoons as a kid?
He’s so funny specifically because he’s very dramatic but he pretends everyone else is being dramatic.
Some examples:
(when Jon threatens to quit unless Elias let’s him explore the creepy tunnels) “Good Lord, Jon, don’t be so dramatic. You know how difficult it would be to replace you.”
(regarding murder) “I may have… Overreacted”
*getting beaten up* “Detective, *wheeze* this is unnecessary”
That time Elias told Jon Melanie was trying to kill him in his tired manager voice.
Oh, colors are so different when I look at them on my phone instead of my tablet. Oh well, this is a WIP. Anyway,
I’ve seen Jonah Magnus wearing eye jewelry and raise you: Jonah Magnus wears lover’s eye jewelry (featuring: his gay polycule (and Albrecht’s wife Clara)) (edit: no I knew I was forgetting some! Sampson and his wife, I need to give them eyes too!!)
“Ah, Mr. Bouchard. So sorry to keep you waiting. Please, take a seat, and we’ll begin.”
[ID: Art of the original Elias Bouchard before his job interview. He stands in front of a wall lined with portraits of the Institute Heads, who are all smirking and all have yellow eyes looking either directly at the viewer or at Elias. Elias’ head is placed where the tenth portrait would go, and his eyes are the same yellow as the ones in the portraits. He turns to where an opened door casts light into him. The only colors used are green and yellow, with yellow for the light and the eyes and green for everything else. End ID]
These evil old men deserve a creepy pet cat. Peter also deserves some dangly earrings - Elias shouldn’t have all the fun! (They’re little sailboats made from seaglass <3)
Tragedy enjoyers when characters haunt the narrative, when nothing can be done to save them, when small moments of respite and happiness only serve to send them closer to their inevitable end
i saw this video elsewhere and wanted to post it here —
wind turbine that got struck by lightning near Cromwell, TX
[video description: footage of a wind turbine with one arm on fire. as it rotates, the flaming arm gives off smoke, which then drifts away from the turbine in a spiral. by the end of the video, the flame has made it all the way along the arm and onto the “stem,” and the arm has broken in two. the weather is cloudy and dark. end video description.]
So Jon’s about a month into his new position as Head Archivist. it’s… fine. this is fine. gertrude was a mess, clearly, and elias is even more of a mess for allowing things to get this bad, but it’s fine. it’s fine. he’s fine.
yes, really, martin, stop asking,
And he’s - look, he’s always been a diligent person, always very committed to his work, so naturally he would spend every waking minute trying to organize the Archives, and naturally he would forget to sleep once or twice or five times a week, and honestly so what if he hasn’t actually touched his bed in nine days? It’s not like the lack of sleep is impeding his brain function. Much.
So it’s a bright and sunny morning in the Institute, and he’s up in one of the many libraries, looking up something about what may or may not have been a sentient kitchen sponge, and one of the researchers comes up to him looking oddly red and kind of stumbling over her words and oh lord no he’s being asked out
He quickly stutters through a rejection, but instead of just accepting it like a normal person (though, in fairness, what normal person would work at the Magnus Institute?), she asks him why not
like. what the fuck.
And Jon isn’t exactly the nicest or most tactful person, but even he isn’t about to look this woman in the eye and tell her that he just straight up does not like her. he’s not even sure he knows her name. there is a whole realm of possibility as to what reason he could give, like he’s too busy, or he isn’t looking to date anyone right now, but those would sound too much like excuses, wouldn’t they, rather than valid reasons to reject her.
He picks the worst option.
“I’m already seeing someone, actually.”
An eyebrow goes up. She looks him up and down. A second eyebrow goes up.
“Really? Who?”
Fuck. Now he has .2 seconds to make up a love story. He’s too tired for this, and he’s never been one for love stories. What makes for a believable romance? And in that panicked, sleep-deprived instant, his eyes fall on a portrait of Jonah Magnus nestled between two shelves, and somehow that prompts a spectacularly terrible response.
“Uh. Elias.”
Twenty minutes later he’s sitting at his desk in a spiral of anxiety. It’s fine, though, right? That woman will probably keep it to herself, and she’s just some random researcher, there’s no way anyone else will hear about his stupid comment. There’s no way Elias will hear about it - and even if he does, Elias has always been a pretty laid back boss, maybe he’ll even find it funny?
Oh lord he’s going to die
The next day, everyone has heard about it. Jon can just feel it in the way people’s eyes follow him. Tim and Sasha give him twin funny looks, kind of half-disbelieving, half-amused. Jon slams his office door slightly harder than necessary. He puts it forcefully from his mind, and the day passes without incident. Until.
It’s the end of the day. Jon is walking towards the Institute’s main doors. Half the Institute seems to be there (fair enough, it is closing time), gathered in bunches, talking quietly, eyes flitting to him and away. Tim and Sasha are sitting on their Gossip Couch in the lobby, watching him. Elias is there, and waves him over, holding something that looks like a statement. Of course, today would be the day he decides to get involved in the archives.
Jon begrudgingly walks over. The second he reaches Elias’ side, Tim’s voice rings across the lobby. He’s walking towards them, saying something about hearing the most interesting thing from a woman in research, and how long have they been together?
Elias looks at him. Jon can see the instant when he realizes what’s happened, and, more importantly, he can see the precise moment when Elias decides to make things infinitely worse, because his eyes light up like he’s just been offered a second Christmas.
Elias turns back to Tim and, entirely matter-of-factly, says, “Two weeks.”
‘it wasn’t your fault, just bad luck, though i’m sure the knowledge brings you no comfort’ is probably still one of the most meaningful things tma had to say
tma episodes 82 - 106 - 118 - 160 - 200
or, in other words, things that keep me awake at night if i think about them a little too intensely for my own good
sorry today i cant stop thinking about this but like. it is such a weird thing to say for someone who’s deliberately trying to hurt you. 'nothing that happened to you has been your fault, there is no reason no justification for it, it is just how it works because it is just bad luck’. it is such a fundamentally KIND thing to say.
of course it doesn’t diminish the harm but it is such a deliberate choice when it comes to his characterization that it upsets me to no end this was never brought to our attention more. jonah wanted to be in control of himself so much that he damned the world for it and continuously re-addresses his own control over the narrative by stressing how the other characters instead are not.
and yet this is never explored within the framework of the narrative even if season 5 would have been the perfect moment to do so. like what brought you to such extremes. what made you so scared.
Elias Bouchard is so funny to me. This man lets Gertrude did whatever she wanted for 40 years. He calls Basira Detective despite that not being her job literally because he likes how it sounds. He’s so unassuming for almost 2 seasons. One of his employees is frustrated and he literally said: ‘have you tried working?? mindless filing helps :D’ . He drives people up the wall with his cryptid answers. He kept the bones of one of his friends from 200 years ago in his office. He hired Martin despite knowing damn well he was very much unqualified for the job. I love him
Ill be honest i dont vibe w the jon was always in love with martin narrative
Not because I hate love or whatever but I’ve fought for my share of product and funding before and ill be honest I think it was just a hate the library guy on principle
Like if my chef picked out four people to be his team and his chef above him sent in a fifth unannounced my chef wouldn’t be happy. If the fifth, on the first day, let a cat in the kitchen?
Well.
Jon, meeting martin: cunt let a DOG in my office, on his first day I was supposed to pick MY OWN staff the archives are a fucking wreck and hes a LIBRARY bitch. Fuck him. Riot.
And where does the romance stem from without the trauma breaking down the previous perceptions of each other? Did it come before or after Jon openly discusses not caring if Martin lives or dies? 🤨
And like, the fault wasn’t only in Jon. Martin wasn’t the fat nice warm guy with a cup of tea who was wimpering and staring up with his beautiful cow eyes in s1. Abused for no reason and sooooo cute and sweet while evil nasty boss Jon told him to go explore the evil caves that bite and maim and kill. Martin was just as much a reason for them not working out in s1. Like, Jon has a deathly fear of spiders and complains on record about Martin scolding him for killing spiders. Martins noted as pushing peoples limits OFTEN. Anytime hes in scene he’s scolding someone for not doing what he wants or what he says or talking out their “feelings”. And on feelings, Martin spends the entirety of s5 badgering Jon to talk about HIS feelings sure. But ANY TIME before this Jon has been routinely beaten with rocks for talking about his feelings. Last time he talked about his feelings he was walked into a domain of the web, given a statement that may have been a lie from annabelle, and it was made JONS fault it all happened. Like.
🧍♀️
And like in s5 jon DOES try to talk about his feelings. But Martin tells him he won’t hear it. Because Jon’s feelings are monster feelings and Martin isn’t willing to let go of “Jon” to realize what he has in front of him. There’s no jmart without the trauma bestie, these two would have died hating each other if every other person in the room didnt prove themselves hostile when Jon literally stalked them. Followed them home and accused them of murder and treated them all like they did something wrong while they were in the middle of coping with THEIR worlds being taken apart.
Dont get me wrong they are like a brother to me but martin is not some abused little meow meow getting a cup of tea splashed on him and looking up all sopping wet winning people over with it. Martin was a dick too, and annoying to boot. They needed the trauma to break through BOTH of their perceptions.
Jon needed to have a REASON to want someone to be there to support him, because without Martin he still had an entire team who would listen to him and do their jobs to varying degrees who HE had history with. And Martin needed a reason for his constant demands of discussion would have a basis. Like. What was the theory here. Tea melts the cold devils heart of the abusive boss?? They needed something to push them to need each other’s quirks to make those things palatable actually. Hope this helps.
At some point during seasons 1-4 Elias says something ominous to Jon and then adds “an old friend of mine used to say that the only way to get rid of a temptation is to yield to it”. Jon blinks once, twice and then answers: “Elias, that’s just a quote by Oscar Wilde”.
Silence. No one ever mentions this again.
Fast-forward to the middle of the apocalypse when Martin sees Jon stumble and suddenly say, completely unprompted: “He was friends with Oscar Wilde??????”
If you’re going to compare Martin Blackwood and Barnabas Bennett, you have to contrast them. They’re opposites except for
“trapped in the Lonely by a Lukas”… which was when Barnabas
begged for rescue ineffectually while Martin said he was fine (because
mind control).
Martin dropped out of school at 17 to support his mother, which he wouldn’t have had to do if he had any other financial resources or social support. Barnabas was so high status that he thought no judge would find in Mordecai Lukas’s favour if he simply refused to repay his loan.
Martin fell in love with a guy who spent a while insulting/stalking him, so I think we can say that he gets attached, like, relatively easily? Barnabas said that “I have no one in the world whose absence truly pains me.”
Elias is trying to gossip with his husband, but Peter could not care less about whatever it is he’s saying. It seems like their date night might be ending in another divorce… 👀
It’s so funny to me that all the entities have some deeper meaning. Vast? Not only the fear of heights, but also the fear of being insignificant. Corruption? Not only fear of bugs, but toxic relationships and not belonging.
I drew an angsty thing for the last day of @lonelyeyesweek I like thinking about Elias being sad about Peter dying knowing full well he let it happen for his own benefit. And he would do it again. Also I couldn’t decide which colors I liked better.
Also here are the lines by themselves so you can see the glory that is Peter’s hair
HAH I have no idea if you're still in the mood for art requests but could I humbly ask for;;;; som Peter;;;;;;; literally just Him he doesn't even have to do anything I just love him and your design sjcnjdnfn
I didn’t realize there was so much Discourse about Jonah Magnus being trans 😭
Look. Look. It’s a bad stereotype to characterize a predatory character as trans/gay… when that’s the only type of character that is trans and/or gay. But when you have fans making almost the entire cast LGBT+ in some way, and there are multiple characters seen as trans…. Then the Implications don’t really exist
Because it’s very obviously not a case of “this character is evil because he’s trans / or vice versa”. It’s more, “I really like this character, and (optionally) I think it adds a fascinating and compelling detail to him to be trans!” It’s a celebration, rather than an insult!

While I really like the idea of Jon having glasses in the beginning but not needing them post-coma I think it’d be hilarious if he just. Stopped wearing them out of spite. The Eye gets pissy about a statement? The glasses come off. Elias trying to spy on the archive gang? No glasses for you. Naughty watchers get good vision rights revoked
Elias tries to see what Jon and the others are planning from jail but everything just looks like this:
Elias: Peter, as acting Head of the Institute, you’ll need to attend the upcoming funding meeting. Elias: Busiest and most important one of the year, so listen closely to who will be there. Peter: *already fading away into the Lonely* Elias: No, hear me out: Firstly, the head of the Institute. Peter: ….me. Elias: A representative from the Lukas family to discuss yearly grants. Peter: …also me. Elias: A representative from the donors, in this case, also the Lukases. Peter: Am I going to be the only person at this meeting? Elias: Indeed. Peter: You do care.
OKAY TMA PET PEEVE IS PEOPLE CALLING JONAH MAGNUS A CAPITALIST. I KNOW OTS USUALLY A JOKE BUT JONAH ISNT A CAPITALIST!!! JONAH ISNT A CAPITALIST!!!! HE RUNS A RESEARCH INSITITUTE. HE RUNS A RESEARCH INSTITUYTE RHAT IS PRIVATELY FUNDED. HE DOESNT EVEN SELL ANYTHING
