Obsessed with the idea of sacrifice in a book being a selfish act rather than a selfless one. Their lover screaming at them: “How dare you leave me in this barren world? How dare you take away my choice to die for you and leave me with this grief?”. They are dead, and their lover is left - a gaping wound - bleeding into the ground. Do they love them so much that they would die for them, or do they love them so much that they forced the other to live without them? Sacrifice as a bitter act. Sacrifice as something wildly violent; something tormentingly cruel — but always, always built on love. Perhaps, they are both martyrs in the end.
I love you characters who are bad people, I love you characters that make me think, I love you characters that represent what happens to a person if they make bad choices, I love you characters that make me scared, I love you characters who take out their problems on other people, I love you characters that dont get redeemed, I love seeing the dark side of the human condition
the thing is, i think horror needs to have a little love. it needs to have an obsession. does the parasite in your body love you? it raises you from the dead, it sustains you. this is its body. this is your body. does the haunted house feel intruded upon? is it hungry? what is hatred but adoration?
the anti queer Elias argument is so funny to me. “He’s not your queer icon.” Bestie name me one cishet Elias fan. People project onto their faves and there’s nothing wrong with that
“I,” J- no, Elias now- spoke delicately, voice rough from the crocodile tears he’d been shedding, “cannot believe you wore navy to poor James’ funeral.”
“Can you at least hold the umbrella so that I’m not getting rained on?”
“One would think,” Elias ignored him, “seeing as funerals are the only social events your family holds, that you would have some proper clothes to wear for one.”
“It’s dark enough. It’s practically black.” No one at a Lukas funeral would have looked twice at Peter’s coat. No one would have looked once at him either. They all preferred to keep their eyes to themselves, like civilized people. “You’re the only one here who cares about this.”
“It’s my funeral; mine is the only opinion that matters!”
“You are the most self-centered person I know.”
The other Magnus Institute employees attending James Wright’s funeral edged further away from the pair.
They get divorced so much because they care about each other. Hear me out.
Peter NEEDS to be alone. Being involved, it’s draining, it’s antithetical to what he is. But he does truly care for Elias.
Elias loves paperwork. Any properly drafted paperwork can cause anyone proper amounts of paranoia. Writing up the divorce papers and adding (useless) stipulations is exciting.
Elias knows Peter needs to be alone at times, and Peter knows how much Elias loves those useless contracts.
So when Elias Knows Peter is drained past comfort he finds something small to get divorced over. To them that is how they say I love you. You’ll never hear them say the words but they know it.
Michael’s girlfriend not only rejected his marriage proposal but she also broke up with him. He wants to sulk and be alone. Or overall to do anything but to engage in conversation with a weird sea man who decides to discuss his own failed marriage proposals with him.
To say that Michael is not having the best day today would be an understatement. Things like that one runs out of coffee, forgets an umbrella on a stormy day and loses his wallet are unfortunate, yes, especially when they pile up on each other like this. But they are still not tragedies. Unlike his girlfriend, well, ex-girlfriend now, rejecting his marriage proposal on their one-year anniversary dinner.
He has no idea what he has done wrong. Yes, they have been seeing each other much less lately but she has started a new job so of course she has not had so much time for him. They were together for a whole year! What did she mean that he is going too fast and being too clingy? Did she forget how he let her stay at his place after she lost her last job and supported her while she was looking for a new one? Was she just using him?
I already share few of my Jonahbas headcannons but may I interested you also in some of my headcannons about Jonathan Faneshawe and his relantionship towards Jonah Magnus (Jonahtan… Jonahshawe? Okay neither of those are probably a real ship names… Does it have a real ship name…?)
Jonathan Fanshawe was from good enough family and he could have lived quite comfortable life treating rich men but he was always much more interested in gaining new knowledge though he was excusing it to himself that examination of dead bodies and illnesses will have bigger impact and might do more good.
He might have even partly work as a coroner - government or judicial official who is empowered to conduct or order an inquest into the manner or cause of death (since he could just request Von Closens body for post-mortem)
He was also performing operations/autopsies in Operating theater* in which students and other spectators could watch surgeons perform surgery. Jonathan was regularly going off the script and trying to do his own inovations. It caught Jonah’s attention as he might have been sneaking there in his own pursue of knowledge. However the univesity was less thrilled and Fanshawe was eventually forbbiden to continue his practice there.
Jonah was trying to make acquaintances with Fanshawe who couldn’t be less interested after just getting dismissed. But in the end Jonah managed to hunt him down on the cemetery where Fanshawe was trying get bodies to experiment on in a less legal way**. Being caught in such an incriminating situation he had no other choice than to listen to his proposal of cooperation.
Jonah wanted to help him even though he still lacked enough monetary means. He got much more important thing: plenty of connections in higher society to whom he could introduce his new good friend ’who was an amazing doctor’ and ’yes indeed all the rumors about him were not true at all!’
Jonathan was overall quite introverted and not so much interested in most of the small talk and pointless conversation but when someone asked him about a topic which was of his expertise he started to ramble about it as much as Jonah did
*I wanted him to be doing public autopsies but after a deep research I found that they on the contrary seem to be illegal to perform. However if anyone have some better reliable source about it please let me know!
**funfact - grave robbing for fresh corpses was quite a thing in the beginning of Victotian era. The grave robbers were called Resurrectionists and they were selling the bodies for autopsies. Fanshawe wanted to simply cut the middle man.
Quote from Circe by Madeline Miller <3 Also, I really wanted to make a web weave kind of thing, so I put even more quotes I liked for their relationship under the cut:
“Zuihitsu” Jenny Xie // “Identity” Milan Kundera // A Conversation Between Timothy Morton and Jeff VanderMeer // Hannibal 3.03 “Secondo” // “I See/You Mean” Lucy R. Lippard // Mahmoud Darwish // Vincent van Gogh // “I never went to that movie at 12:45″ Dolly Lemke // “Abject Permanence” Larissa Pham // “Departure” Erika L. Sanchez
every group of occult scholars is just *guy whose organs are filled with eyeballs* *morally questionable medical professional* *the one who knows too much* *dude who owes you money (and refuses to pay you back)* *socially inept*
The Usher Foundation obtains quite strange artifacts. They barely manage to write down their strange history before Magnus Institute starts making the claims for them.
Charlie is thrilled about their promotion. They were working in the Research department of the Usher Foundation for quite a while and most of the time they were just sorting documents and doing background checks of items from the comfort of their office. Nothing they would call real research. Nothing that would allow them to come in contact with the supernatural and cursed-… They stop themselves in their mind. No, these are not the appropriate terms as their boss would say. ‘The objects with suspicion of unnatural occurrence’ is what they are expected to call them. Or something like that.
But who cares. Charlie has always been fascinated by occult and unexplainable stuff and they will finally get their chance to learn more about it. They will get to lead their own project researching their own item with a history of ‘unnatural occurrences.’ Last few days they have been studying all the information so far, they prepared possible suggestions for experimentations and they’ve signed all the necessary documentation regarding safety measurements with handling it. And today, today they can finally start the real work-
“What do you mean ‘the item not found’? Check again!” Charlie leans over to see at the screen of the artifact storage curator because she surely must have put it wrongly in the system. The curator gives them an annoyed look and turns the screen away from Charlie.
“I have just added in the code you said,” she shrugs, “It says the items are no longer in care of Usher Foundation as project #0110207 ‘Wedding Rings’ was canceled-“
I love any version of Peter with long hair, but especially when it’s extra long, not just a little scruffy. That man has never had been to a barbershop and he stopped getting haircuts the moment his childhood caretakers stopped cutting his hair for him <3
The first time Jonah saw him after becoming Elias, he itched to run his fingers through Peter’s hair. An instinct left over from Elias’s own preferences; James had liked to pull his hair, but had no further thoughts about it. But Jonah has never been one to deny himself what he wants, so Elias braided Peter’s hair and claimed it was to practice hand-eye coordination in his new body
Instead of finding Elias floating and chanting nonsense words, Martin and Jon find him facedown, draped over his desk with carmelldansen playing in the background
