Fun Fact, thats, more or less, something that wealthy people in China and Japan did, they were called “musical floorboards.” Designed to squeak when stood upon. A person could make noise all the way down a corridor.

The residents and servants knew which floorboards made a sound and avoided them. But a burglar, or assassin didn’t. If you heard the creaking of floorboards, you knew danger was coming.

Even better, despite what movies may show, a lot of the old west was founded by Chinese immigrants, so there could have been carpenters around who knew how to make the musical floorboards!

They were also called Nightingale Floors, and looking up to make sure I had the right term, I found they were super clever! They were more than just ill-fit boards or whatever makes floors creak normally, they actually used little metal bars under the boards placed into small holes in the boards to cause the creak.

The best things on the internet are when someone makes a joke and then Miss Frizzle rolls up for an educational adventure.

A nightingale floor is maintained in the Nijo castle of Kyoto. All the corridors and porches are made that way, so you get to walk on it as you visit the building, and it is extremely impressive.

As a tour guide explained it, more than a legitimate warning system for danger, the purpose of it was basically intimidation through psychological warfare. The point isn’t so much that it lets you hear where intruders are, it’s to let them know that you know they’re here.

At the time, the castle would have many visitors from rival lords and clans etc (forgive my shoddy Japanese history I just remembered the cool anecdote), with rooms dedicated specifically to meeting ambassadors and messengers. The architecture of those rooms is designed to drive home who’s in charge, and so is the fact that you have to walk along a nightingale floor to get there: the entire corridor creaaaaaaks with every step you take on your way. The lord of the castle knows you’re here. The lord of the castle knows exactly where you are.

If you’ve ever tried to discreetly sneak inside an old-timey church while a ceremony is happening, and the door is heavy and slowly squeaking and every goddamn step you take on the stone floors echoes horribly up in the high ceilings and even if no one looks at you you feel like eyes are boring through the back of your skull – that’s the feeling, and it’s done to you on purpose.

So important to me that Jonah is absolutely mourning Barnabas. He keeps the guy’s bones in his office and (in this fic) talks to them to fill the silence. He weeps for Barnabas, he misses him… And if given the choice, he would absolutely leave Barnabas to die a second time if he had to do it all over again. He would watch again as Barnabas’s fear grows and grows until his body could no longer take the strain, he would drink in his friend’s terror until it ran dry and there was nothing left. And he would gather up the bones again and would mourn him no less a second time.

But he would still do it.

I don’t think Elias was lying when he said he listened to Ghosthunt UK, specifically because of a turn of phrase he uses in MAG 160: he qualifies the extraction of Melanie’s bullet as “surgery gone wrong”, a typical YouTube clickbait construction that could also be construed as a nod to her former profession. (He clearly loves his ironies.) So intriguing.

He’s an old man! He has hobbies! He’s unrelentingly chasing after the goal of breaking reality itself so no one can do it to him first! He’s nerdy!

I wonder, I want a poll because I need to know. How many LonelyEyes shippers think that Elias and Peter actually like each other?

Wait can you actually literally do polls now? … But I have to update my Tumblr app to even see the posts, and I’m not doing that if the Tumblr Live thing still exists :/

Yes, this is the discourse I’m talking about!!! I’ve gotten 3 replies and they’re all different! One yes, one yes and it’s incredibly inconvenient for them both, and one no! <3

You don’t understand, I love just how many ways there are to portray and interpret LonelyEyes. Like, they love each other genuinely, or they are so attached to each other and they hate it, or their own feelings are so complicated that they themselves don’t fully understand them, or they’re obsessed with each other, or they like to fuck but there’s no real feelings involved, or they love each other until they get divorced (again), or they hate each other so much that they just have to have sex about it. And many more options and different ways to think about them!!

Also why I think it’s so fun to read about the ship from other characters’ POV

I don’t think they do, but I also think it’s more complicated than them just disliking each other. As avatars, there’s a lot more value in a relationship where they don’t have the expectations of ‘liking’ someone applied to them. They can be rude and vitriolic toward each other, avoid each other, manipulate each other, use each other, hurt each other, and even kill each other, and that’s fine, because they don’t expect each other to maintain a veneer of human connection that they obviously don’t have a great capacity for (especially Peter, as a creature that is repelled by connection). They understand each other and accept each other and can find each others company agreeable sometimes and that’s enough. It works for them. It makes them comfortable being permanent fixtures in each others lives, for so long as the other lives.

I guess you could say that they like that they can be themselves around each other? But I don’t think the understood meaning of ‘like’ between people really applies to them otherwise. That’s just my take on them, though. The idea of two people magnetically seeking each other out despite their dislike appeals to me a lot.

That said, I’ve indulged in illegal soft LonelyEyes and I’ve definitely read fic that convinced me they could develop in that direction. I’ll probably write a fic like that myself one day.

they dont they dont they dont like each other

peter is the literal embodiment of loneliness and elias is a Sad Old Man who spent his life watching through someone else’s eyes and Knowing everyone around him without anyone ever Knowing him back

elias is embracing his own loneliness, the watcher in his ivory tower who got the most ironic gift of all when trying his hand at his ritual and only getting a pat on the back from his god, who basically told him “now go and make me a better avatar cause you aint shit”

peter and the lukases in general are Very Much into the institute because it is the place where people go to tell their most horrible personal stories and while they may get catharsis, they never never ever get help here. Observe and record, dont interfere. They come in lonely and scared and come out even lonelier.

they’re two parasitic old men who feed off each other’s worse traits, it’s codependent and beautifully evil. i think most fandom sees it as a crack ship (and it can be, sure) but theres deeply wrong canon material in here too and THAT is interesting

my personal preference is that they do really sincerely like one another and it massively inconveniences them both because they are on opposing sides of the same eldritch war

i love the dynamic of peter’s affection for elias being a fundamental betrayal of his own family legacy/patron, and the idea that elias’ very real attachment to peter prevents him from killing him outright when he gets in his way

and i also love the thought that the lukases have been tied to jonah since the beginning of the institute (or before) so jonah has had a long line of lukas paramores throughout his many forms (though not THAT long since the lukas family seems to have longer than human lifespans)

that said, you can only really betray someone if you know them intimately, so peter and elias having real deeply held and deeply inconvenient love for one another only makes the cycle of betrayal worse

I’m not sure how familiar those on this thread are with aromantism, but I’d like to present it as a way to define lonelyeyes better, atleast in my perspective. Because, even if they weren’t avatars, even if all these horrors didn’t exist that twist Peter and Elias into being truly evil people, I don’t believe they’d ever be truly in love.

Sure, maybe something more passive might exist, but if you place yourself in their shoes, it’s kind of hard to imagine a romantic relationship with active date nights, and valentines day celebrations or grand gestures. Maybe in some OOC universe where they seem capable of those emotions their dynamic might shift, but I honestly believe as they stand, the pair are queer platonic at most.

They trust each other, this much is true. Enough to share secrets, play games, make plans and expose themselves to vulnerability. That’s not just something you do with a random business acquaintance. The fact Peter is aware of the panopticon, Jonah’s body’s location, Jonahs existence in Elias and more is proof enough of that.

But it’s not love.

Atleast not love in the sense that most people see it. It’s not first dates and Butterflies, it’s not long walks and sweaty palms, it’s not hearts skipping beats and passionate kisses. No it’s none of that.

Instead it’s a mutal comfort in one another. The knowledge that around one another they don’t need to pretend because they know the other one is just as messed up as they are. It’s the trust that allows someone to leave, and you just trust they’ll come back. It’s a safety blanket that someone will have your back no matter what, that idea of we can be as cruel as we want to each other, but say or do one thing to hurt them and I’ll kill you. It’s about coexisting alongside one another, simply being, as a way to fend off loneliness.

It’s not love no, not as you know it. It’s not romantic or sweet, but it works, because it’s all they need. Infact it’s kind hard to see to see them having something more with each other or someone else, so they marry. More for convinence than anything else. Alot of Queer platonic partners do it. It’s nice to share a space, share a home, but it’s not at anyway catered towards any stereotypical dynamics and honestly, if anyone tried to make it nuclear they just might off themselves.

But they exist together, call each other husbands, occasionally share a bed, but they’re not in love. They don’t really kiss unless it’s a formality, they don’t really hold hands unless Peter’s staring to wonder off, but occasionally they’ll lean into each other while walking, or Elias will lay his head in Peter’s lap while the pair are talking, or small gestures of fondness. It’s not love no, no as most people know it. But it’s love to them. Maybe they redefine the words, and say it to one another that way, or maybe they just smile and nods occasionally.
