Clearly, Elias must be watching him through the security cameras, waiting to see if he messes up, because he knows that Jon is underqualified for this job! Jon, of course, deals with this suspicion in a very normal way. Throughout work, he talks out loud, directly to Elias, under the assumption that he’s listening, and whenever Martin does anything at all ever, Jon looks directly into the security camera like he’s on The Office.
Thinking about the ending of the show when John pulls Elias down for a talk/stabbing and Elias almost sounds like he’s going to pull some “I was being controlled; I’m innocent” shit but doubles back to being evil.
“John, is that you?… I was, I was having, [pause for emphasis with smug evil voice] the most wonderful dream.”
No fascinating insights, just love how Elias’ evil is portrayed. Even in his last moments the dude just wants to chugg fear.
What if part of the reason Peter likes being around Jonah is because he is attracted by the waves of incredible loneliness and despair coming off of Original Elias who is trapped as a helpless prisoner inside his own body?

its so weird to me the way parts of the fandom talk about 160. like jon “accidentally” ended the world, or was “manipulated” into it. like. bruh he was literally being mind controlled and wasnt able to move any of his limbs even tho he was audibly straining. he wasn’t “tricked,” as if he chose to do it out of misinformation (like say, gertrude was tricked into her binding with agnes). he was only “tricked” into picking up the wrong piece of paper which stripped him of his free will, in a very unsettling mirror of his first mark. everything after that was completely without any input from him, informed or no. jonah ended the world. jon was just forced to be present for it.
its like if i offered u a handshake, then when u got close picked u up and threw you at someone and then said you were “tricked” into hitting them. like no there were actually a few more steps there between the deception and the violence.

eugh blugh anyway anyway. elias like talks to jon completely differently than he talks to anyone else. if jon is the room he is talking exclusively to jon regardless of how many other people are in the room. if jon is not in the room but there’s a tape recorder running he’s talking to jon. if he thinks jon might have this conversation relayed to him at a later date he’s talking to jon. mag 92 is hysterical because why did you pack this office with as many people as possible for this conversation and then audibly not break eye contact with one specific guy for twenty minutes. well this is because jon is the only person that actually exists to him in this situation. or most situations. elias knows he’s in a podcast but as far as he’s concerned he and jon are the only characters in it and everyone else is set dressing and he gets so cranky about it when the set dressing starts expressing free will. jon is aware that other people exist 95% of the time unless he is actively talking to and/or yelling at elias and then he kind of forgor. mag 102 when elias is like melanie is coming to murder me with a knife for like .25 seconds jon is like the fuck is melanie and then returns to reality and remembers he has a life outside of “weird thing with elias” and is kind of embarrassed. like uh whoops sorry got kind of intense there for a second (elias continues to be kind of intense unabated) (forever)
Thinking about how much more compelling if would be to me if Jon did end the world himself. Like if instead of physically being unable to stop reading Jonah’s statement to end the world, I’d love to see a universe where he just needed to know what it would do. What if the tape recorder clicked on and off throughout Jon’s day, catching snippets of conversations where he’s just waiting for Martin to leave him alone to be can dig into the box of statements, the anticipation building. If there was no deception, no trickery to the statement itself. It’s just hidden in the box, but it’s the first one the Archivist is drawn to. It’s about him. It calls to him. He needs to read it. He needs to Know. The parallel of Jonah leaving Barnabas to his doom, Jon reading the statement that he knows is a Ritual. They have to do it. The burning curiosity would never leave them alone if they stopped now. They have to Know.

He compels people to answer questions, to talk about their fears. He generally prefers calling it The Beholding instead of the Eye. Jonah’s powers are linked to his eyes.
