Thinking about how much more compelling if would be to me if Jon did end the world himself. Like if instead of physically being unable to stop reading Jonah’s statement to end the world, I’d love to see a universe where he just needed to know what it would do. What if the tape recorder clicked on and off throughout Jon’s day, catching snippets of conversations where he’s just waiting for Martin to leave him alone to be can dig into the box of statements, the anticipation building. If there was no deception, no trickery to the statement itself. It’s just hidden in the box, but it’s the first one the Archivist is drawn to. It’s about him. It calls to him. He needs to read it. He needs to Know. The parallel of Jonah leaving Barnabas to his doom, Jon reading the statement that he knows is a Ritual. They have to do it. The burning curiosity would never leave them alone if they stopped now. They have to Know.
