Ok, in the episode where Martin starts burning statments Elias tells him he looks like his dad to get him to stop right? Well, right before that Elias says

“You know, I really should have gone for that, found something that
would finally manage to shatter that precious image you have of him. But, as
you say, I am… very busy, at the moment. So, I suppose I’ll just have to go with
what I had prepared.”

When this is said Elias was talking about Jon so, what if instead of revealing the thing about Martin’s he had said something terrible about Jon?

Imagine how much it would change the story if Martin lost faith in Jon!

my problem with getting a grip on elias’s characterization is that I always forget the fact that he’s sillay. like sure he’s evil and sadistic and manipulative and britain’s next top victim blamer but also he says things like “yes, if you die, I’m afraid you probably won’t be able to claim your expenses.” he gets punched in the stomach while being arrested and doubles over in pain and wheezes “ah. I see :)”

I think he decided to make Those death sounds on purpose

Once again thinking that Elias having lunch with the library staff weekly implies he has lunch with EVERY department staff during the week. Once again obsessed with the thought of Martin, on his first Archives Lunch with Tim, Sasha, Jon and Elias, discovering that Elias Bouchard, who is always mild, just the right side of a bore, except when he suddenly stares at you and it feels like he knows all your darkest, deepest secrets, and it amuses him, TURNS INTO A WILDLY DIFFERENT PERSON around Jonathan Sims

I need Martin to spend that first lunch watching Jon and Elias debate whilst staring into each other’s eyes for almost an hour, Jon snarking more and more rudely and Elias’s eyes shining brighter and brighter, until Elias casually fixes something on Jon’s suit that sends Jon FLUSTERING. I need him to try and look at Tim and Sasha with wide, baffled eyed and they do have a minute of commiseration like “oh yeah, man. Yeah.” but then, well, they’re used to it, so they just start their own conversation on the side

They do try to include Martin but eventually they get into something he doesn’t know that they’re passionate about, and so Martin like, gently fades into the background (as usual) and keeps listening to JE, until it almost feels comfortable, to disappear, if sharply lonely, and the moment he thinks that Elias SUDDENLY turns his head around and goes “and how has the new work been treating you, Martin?” and behind him Jon’s eyes finds him as well, and beyond his general contempt for Martin there’s the hint of fear there - that Martin will complain about Jon. To Elias.

“FIne,” says Martin, voice a bit too high, and does not think how hot it makes him feel to have BOTH Jon and Elias stare at him Like That.

(((ALSO: Archives lunch imply years and years and years of Elias and Gertrude having lunch regularly. You’re welcome.)))

The thing about Jonathan Sims is that he looked at the Unsettling Manor on top of the Hill, cast in half shadows already, and decided he had to go there; he pushed the door open. Yes, it was perhaps for the reputed library deep into the heart of the house, yes it was because he wanted answers and to work through the trauma of his childhood, there are billions of reasons that might have lead him to that door, but he opened it. And when he was welcomed in, he decided to ignore all the ways the shadows creeped inside the manor as well, because he was being seduced and it was working.

So there had been others before him; so their ghosts haunted his every step; so the Head of the House dismissed the dangers to encourage knowledge; but, well, wasn’t the head of the house SO knowledgeable? So charming? Wasn’t he opening all the doors to Jon, or at the very least indulgently offering the keys whenever Jon craved them? Was it his fault or Jon’s when Jon stepped into a new room fulled of traps that hurt?

And when Jon finally looked at himself, drapped in beautiful clothes and scars, and realized he’d grown claws, didn’t he feel relief and curiosity first about them? Didn’t he look at his delicate, innocent hands, and realized they might let him fight back and defend himself at last from the shadows? Didn’t he flush when the Head of the House craddled his fingers now covered in blood not his own to kiss them in marvel?

Of course one day it became too much; of course one day he understood he had stayed so long in the house, peering outside hurt more than staying in; the light hurt; everybody else, in the vilage below, was fearing the shadows that had build up in his dark, pretty, irresistable eyes that called them in to feed his newfound hunger.

But he’d opened the front door and let it close back behind him. And wasn’t the House and its Head giving him all that he’d ever desired? When the Head of the House led him, at last, to the Master Bedroom, to the sacrificial altar, when he locked the door behind him and let Jon watch the key burn into the fireplace, when he lovingly took off the impressive white gown to kiss every one of Jon’s scars, of course Jon fought back. But among the terror and the agony of the completion of their marriage, wasn’t there genuine, unspeakable bliss as well?

One of my favorite jonelias Things™️ is when all the yk, big avatars refer to them as “your archivist” or sometimes even “your elias.” That shit makes me eat nails. I need everyone to know they have something going on and it to be something that they know they should absolutely not get involved in because there is no way it ends well. I think they should be intertwined in a way that isn’t quite human. I think they need to be so weird about each other nobody who knows Elias has any doubts about what’s going on. I just think it’s neat!

somuchbetterthanthat:

It’s not that I’m against Jon killing Elias, narratively it makes obvious and satisfying sense and we do get Elias’s “good luck” which still makes me insane to this day, etc.

but ALSO i kinda want to see the version where Elias is right. Where Jon can’t do it. Where Jon is all powerful and godlike and vengeful and when his hands grasp Elias’s wrists, when he’s on top of him full of anger his teeth bared ready to kill the man who made him who he is today, instead he sees all he is today and he crumbles against Elias’s chest and he weeps.

and elias takes a deep, shuddering breath (because the fear WAS here) and then murmurs “there, there. It’s quite alright, Jon. Truly. You are magnificent. It’s alright, I love you.” and gently wrap his arms around him and they lay on the floor like that, as the Eye Watches.

Alrighty. My multichapter fic (Believe Me, Darling) is done. And I need to talk about it because I am excited.

Gifts of our God

I’ve got to say, I think that one huge aspect of Jon and Elias’ relationship is that Elias sees himself in Jon. He sees a scared young man just barely learning about the Fears, but already inextricably intertwined with them. A man with an insatiable thirst for knowledge, a need to know, to understand. Someone who is deeply afraid. Someone who is hated or feared by his associates; surrounded by those he cares about who will die because of him. Someone who basks in the gaze of the Beholding, however unwillingly.

Been working on this for a whole week. @ducksanddairy helped me with polishing and panelling so big thanks to them ❤️❤️❤️

I don’t normally do comics but this was just in my head for ages and I had to satisfy my Jon/Elias kick.
