A black and white image of people's backs. They all have their arms around each other's shoulders. There are signs reading 'Gay Pride'. Overlaid on the image are the words: The truth - as we have painstakingly established across the previous chapters - is this. There is no idea so grand
A black and white photo of the raid on the Stonewall Inn. A young queer person is surrounded by police and is holding their arms up in the air, they look frightened. Overlaid on the image are the words: that it may not be
A photo from a pride in recent times. It is a police vehicle with NYPD in rainbow lettering and it has rainbow stripes. Overlaid on the image are the words: murdered one day in the slumber of its own complacence.
A colour photo of the 1994 mile long pride flag made by Gilbert Baker. Overlaid are the words: There is no tool which may not be
A picture of an IDF soldier posing with a rainbow pride flag in a part of Gaza that has been completely destroyed, reduced to rubble. Written on the pride flag are the words 'In the name of Love'. Overlaid on the image is text saying: repurposed
A photo from pride this year, 2024, of a badge with a rainbow border that reads 'Hello, my pronouns are'. The badge has the logo of J.P Morgan Chase on it so it appears to read 'Hello, my pronouns are J.P Morgan Chase.' Overlaid on the image are the words: no meaning which will not turn to nonsense - given time.
A photo of Unfinished Painting by Keith Haring, 1989. This painting is a largely blank canvas, except for the upper left corner which is painted in purple with black and white lines. The figures and designs in this corner follow Haring's distinctive art style. This portion of the painting includes rounded 'doodles' including those of the human form. A complete human figure is seen just below the geometric frame of the top left corner. Two other incomplete human figures appear to either side, each lacking a head with their necks flowing into other lines of the painting. The central figure is seen in a 'dancing' pose while the two incomplete figures stand on their hands; each of these body positions is indicative of Haring's art style. This design is interrupted by a jagged edge and uncharacteristic drips across the blank canvas below. These purple streaks are smudged and distributed in an apparently random arrangement across the bottom of the completed portion of the painting. The blank canvas constitutes roughly 3/4 of this painting. The painting was left purposely unfinished by Haring to represent his life being cut short by AIDS. Overlaid on the photo are the words: Time is the cruellest and the kindest deity, for it mocks those who seek to triumph from it; for it suffers no power, humours no tyrant; it topples every great justice
An image of a recent concert. The area is packed with as many people as possible. They all have their hands over their heads forming an 'O' because they are dancing to HOT TO GO! by Chappell Roan. No one is wearing a mask. They are bathed in sunlight and some are holding signs. Overlaid are the words: dismembers reason, rots progress
A photo of "Untitled" (Portrait of Ross in L.A.) by Félix González-Torres. It consists of a pile of candies individually wrapped in variously colored wrappers on the floor in the corner of a room. Viewers are permitted to choose to take a piece of candy from the work and the caption states that there is an “endless supply” of candies. It shows an unusual portrait that does not depict the subject’s face in a conventional way. It rather exemplifies the density, physicality, and weight of the body. The ideal weight of the art installation is 175 pounds, which was the weight Ross had before he suffered from AIDS-induced weight loss. Through the interaction of the audience, the weight of the artwork was gradually reduced. The artist, however, gave the instruction that the pile of candy would always have to be refilled. The reduction of the artwork’s “body” and weight can be interpreted as relating to the weight Ross lost before his death. Overlaid are the words: forgets the stories we laid down at its feet.

The truth - as we have painstakingly established across the previous chapters - is this. There is no idea so grand that it may not be murdered one day in the slumber of its own complacence.

There is no tool which may not be repurposed, no meaning which will not turn to nonsense - given time.

Time is the cruellest and the kindest deity, for it mocks those who seek to triumph from it; for it suffers no power, humours no tyrant; it topples every great justice, dismembers reason, rots progress, forgets the stories we laid down at its feet.

There are so many callbacks in tsv that destroy me but this one absolutely gutted me

unbloodiedmartyr:

ok ok ok ok very rough sketch but DO YOU SEE THE VISION?????!!!

valtsv:

i'm just so, so grateful that the silt verses finale said this isn't a story where people get what they deserve. this isn't a story about showing mercy. the answer is not, and has never been, making self-righteous value judgements that you can justify to yourself in the telling later on. the greatest thing we can do in this world is to be kind to one another. to give without expecting anything in return. that's all that ever was, and ever will be, what we owe to each other. that's all.

ourladyamalthea:

what she says: yea i’m fine

what she’s thinking: the story brought both carpenter and faulkner to their inevitable end points that have been foreshadowed from the v first episode of the show ambiguity of carpenters death aside she stood on the banks of the river singing like her nana glass and was gunned down by the military and faulkner was drowned dragged delivered by the god and story he had let devour him but. but. before those things happened right before the narrative reached its end both of them stood up and said no! i want to go forward! i want to find something past this whatever it might be i don’t want it to take me yet im going to keep on walking! and it was too late! the thing is it was too fucking late!!!!!!! the aquifer was already flooding the soldiers were closing in she was to hurt to run he can’t swim. the chance had come and gone at the beginning of the episode for any hope of them reaching each other ever again but even though it was too little too late never ever going to be enough they both looked the site of their doom in the eyes and said i do not accept this. not here. not now. i am staring at you– the thing that will eat me — and resolving to pry open the jaws and choose to use the last moments of my life (whether i know it or not) to run and stumble and crawl and cry and sing in the hopes of reaching the people who matter to me more than being made your meal. and of course they got fucking eaten anyways. of course they did bc they were walking towards it from the beginning. but there is a way out, there is a way forward, there is a land beyond the storm that is possible to reach if you choose to step out of the story that has been built for you to find it. we walk on, with a rough and tarnished hope, and a tangled, ruined love. it can end with love, and it can end with kindness. even as the jaws are closing. ours is a world of miracles.

the silt verses season 3 + dying words.

brother philly:

CARPENTER:

(Breathless and furious)

I told him. I told him I wouldn’t take another life in his name. I was done with him.

And yet there you are, brother - and here I am.

BROTHER PHILLY:

(In pain)

No, wait-

-and she shoots him.

CARPENTER:

There’s your fucking miracle.

adjudicator cross:

CROSS:

(Yelling)

I…I wrote my wine cellar off as a business expense! Five hundred and eighty bottles of finest Linger vintage, my life’s work! I said it was for hosting!

(As the exasperated final straw)

And I never sodding drank half of it!

CARPENTER:

(Yelling)

Feels better, doesn’t it! Anyone else?

CROSS:

(A panicked yelp, seconds before impact)

Oh, gods!

carson:

CARSON:

(Experiencing it, believing it)

I was…I was a milkman.

VAL:

(Kindly)

Yes, you were.

CARSON:

(Feebly, offering up one final kindness in turn)

And you, Val…You were a ballerina. You danced.

And afterwards…you read your books, in the sunlight, far from anyone - for as long as you wanted.

(Just enjoying the thought of it)

You danced. And then you didn’t.

CARSON wheezes, breathes out - and expires.

rane:

FAULKNER:

It’s funny, Rane, it’s really, really funny! You don’t look any different! You’re meant to be born anew, Sibling! That’s what this is all about!

(Striking RANE with the butt of the staff)

You’re meant to be DIFFERENT! You’re meant to be BETTER!

Why aren’t you becoming SOMETHING BETTER?

On the third strike, the staff snaps apat. SIBLING RANE fights to the surface.

SIBLING RANE:

(Gasping)

Please! High Prophet! Please! I’m begging you!

val:

VAL collapses into a chair, breathing hard.; she's utterly spent The gas is still hissing behind her; the music is still playing.

There's a box of matches on the side. She shakes it experimentally, then takes one out.

VAL:

(Speaking it into reality, one last time)

And before she died...

...she remembered who she was.

The music stops.

VAL lights the match.

We hear the rising roar of an explosion-

shrue:

BROTHER PHILLY:

(Furious)

You’re supposed to be talking about us!

(Roaring)

TALK ABOUT US!

TALK - ABOUT - US!

On the other side of the glass, he hefts his rifle.

SHRUE:

(Yelling)

Kill your gods!

The glass of the booth window explodes as PHILLY furiously fires. SHRUE cries out - and falls.

hayward:

HAYWARD:

Never really cared for any of you all that much, if I’m honest. You never made life much easier for me.

Silence.

HAYWARD:

(With dying satisfaction, and one final shrug)

Fuck it. This one’s not…for any of you.

This one’s for me.

He gasps, shudders - and then he dies.

faulkner:

Sister! I love you! Where are you going?

Don’t turn your back on me! Don’t you dare- don’t you dare-

(Gasping and resurfacing)

Sister! Sister! I need you!

(Coughing and sinking)

SISTER, PLEASE! COME BACK! PLEASE HELP ME!

SISTER! MARCO! MARCO!

CAN YOU HEAR ME? SISTER!

(Screaming at the Trawler-man)

Let me go! Let me go!

Let me go! LET ME GO! I-

Sister, please, please-

MARCO!

MARCO!

SISTER!

carpenter:

CARPENTER:

(Softly declaiming to the sky)

I’ll forget what I was.

When the tide comes home.

I’ll forget what I did,

When the tide comes home.

There’ll be…there’ll be no more need

For hurt, word or deed

For counsel or creed

For…for sorrow or…

(Chuckling; she can’t remember it)

How did the damn thing end again? How did it, uh-

She begins to laugh, tiredly and brokenly-

-and then a loud gunshot rings out from the hills below. One last trick.

.....and finally, a bonus.

our final girl.

paige:

We walk on, with a rough and tarnished hope, and a tangled, ruined love.

We hope that against all odds, we will find more than just another lonely ending in the darkness.

We hope that those who come after us will make it further than we could.

We hope you find the missives that have been left for you. We hope you can make sense of them.

We hope you find them flawed, inadequate, yearning.

We hope someday you’ll find a way to follow us.

Silence.

PAIGE:

(Slowly, calmly, with feeling)

These were The Silt Verses.

[ID: A digital drawing of Brother Faulkner from the Silt Verses podcast. He kneels in a shallow part of a pool of glowing, green water under the Grand Aquifer, straddling Sibling Rane, who lies limply at the bottom with their face right under the surface, visible where Faulkner's reflection would be. Faulkner's face is upturned, with the water surface reflecting off his skin. He is wearing an expression of exaltation morphing into dread and staring into the distance. On the first picture, his head is surrounded by a halo. On the second, by the Withermark. He is alone. End ID]

The Silt Verses ep 45 - Of Love, and Gods' Defeat

melandrops:

From Carpenter's beginning, a jaded heretic with a kill count that she doesn't allow to keep her awake at night, a past and a present drowned in blood - to her ending, laying her brother to rest despite the tears of rage in her eyes.

From Faulkner's beginning, a boy trying to find his place in the parish that calls himself their family and desperately hoping to be something more - to his ending, wading into the water he can't swim in for the sake of walking at his sister's side.

From Hayward's beginning, a perpetrator of the system, up to his neck in violence and all too eager to believe that he is right- to his ending, telling Paige to go on without him with no hesitation to lay down his life for her safety.

From Paige's beginning, a suit who sits at the board room and wonders aloud how to make their bloodshed sanitized - to her ending, allowing her godchild to fester in her body so she may watch her people walk onward to better lands.

From Shrue's beginning, a politician who cares only for being reelected, who wavers at the very idea of radicalism - to their ending, dying for the most radical of causes, screaming a cry for change with their last breaths.

From VAL's beginning, a weapon of war, razing lands under her feet and nothing more than her anger - to her ending, using the last dregs of her strength to give people their greatest desires.

At the end of the day, they all chose kindness. They chose to love, despite the cruelty of their world and the horrors they saw.

They were human, even at the mercy of their gods.

a digital drawing of carpenter, hayward, paige, and faulkner colored in hues of blue. carpenter, hayward and paige are all inlaid in a stained glass divided into three sections with a circular section towards the top. in the bottom section, hayward and paige stand back to back in the left and right most panels respectively. hayward has dark skin and dark short hair with bits of gray in it. he stands facing left, looking up with a cigarette in his mouth, the smoke floating up form it colored red. paige stands facing right in the right most column looking down poor a bottle of red wine down into the ground. she has shoulder length brown hair and pale skin. both are standing in front of a tree. instead of leaves, the tree is filled with white crocus flowers, some covered in blood. the top circular section of the stained glass is shaped like the wither mark only instead of the usual symbols in the teeth stands carpenter, her back to the viewer. Carpenter has dark brown wavy hair tied in a ponytail and a simple red plaid button up. there are streaks of grey in her hair and faint scars up her arm. she is looking at her raised left hand which is holding the silt verses, the book alight with flame. in front of the stained glass panel stands a solemn looking faulkner in katabasian robes his eyes are closed and his head down. he has dark skin, brown curly hair and freckles. clutched in his right hand is a tattered copy of the silt verses. his hand is bandaged and blood is seeping through. at the very bottom of the drawing, flowing over faulkner are the smallest ripples of water, already covering him up to his waist. the middle glass panel he stands in front of, the one in between paige's and hayward's, is cracked, forming a red halo-like shape around faulkner's head. at the very top corner of the stained glass on either side of the circular shape with carpenter, are two hands, faulkner's and carpenter's, reaching out to each other. faulkner's hand is covered with bits of blood splatter while carpenter's is streaked with dirt.

tsvwords:

Happy, are you? With how it turned out?

You’ll take that boy, and you’ll eat him up.

It doesn’t matter if you do it today in this sodden ruin you’ve created, or you wait forty years until he’s old and quaking and calls it a blessing to have your servants crawling out from behind his eyes to seek new light - you’ll take all that was good and all that was rotten and every ounce of potential in him and you’ll eat every part of him up.

And you’ll keep on whispering to him that he’s right on the verge of realising something, gaining something real and true, and he’ll keep walking his way towards your baited fucking lure as it skitters away at every turn until you’re ready to bite.

Doesn’t that make you ashamed? To scavenge off our lives, when they’re all we have?

What is the point of you?
