I thought you should know that your fanart got me into HxH! I'd never heard of it before, but I kept seeing your work and I got interested. I ended up watching most of it in a few days. Thank you for introducing me to such a great story!! I'm hoping to start reading it when I have the time, too!

i’ve never done a speedpaint before, mainly because i am very inconsistent about drawing/painting, as in one minute i am sketching the characters, and the other i start marathoning every single one of sw films.

but! i do have some painting tips that can potentially save time and make the end result look better:

1. color studies!! man that shit is a life saver when i actually bother to do them. before you start painting your pic, make a bunch of thumbnail copies and slap some colors onto them. it will help you a) determine the color scheme, b) distribute the values properly, so that your piece doesn’t turn out evenly gray-ish.

2. don’t focus on just one detail while painting. use that bucket tool or a huge-ass brush and fill the entirety of that canvas with colors. progress from one plane to another evenly: don’t get stuck on, say, just the character; if you decide to slap some shadows on that pic, do it everywhere.

3. this one is a thing that helped me immensely, but i realize that it might not be suitable for everyone. anyway, if you want to progress from line-art + color scheme to solid painting, approach your digital canvas as you would a traditional one. which means, NO MORE THAN ONE LAYER DUDE! we are rolling around in the same sticky paint from the sketch to the final brushstroke now.

4. don’t be afraid of using colors. the best of my pictures were those where i stopped caring and added ridiculous amounts of saturated colors where they shouldn’t belong (or so my brain was teling me). use blues and oranges to paint that pale kid mcgee’s skin.

5. harsh strokes can be yummy. most of the time, the blur tool is ur enemy.

6. use references to study lighting/shadows/reflected light. PLS EVERYONE USE REFERENCES they are good for your soul

7. experiment with the settings of your brushes! i know that it’s kind of a thing on tumblr to ask the artists for their brush settings, but the truth is, you are gonna need brushes with different characteristics for different tasks.
