digital fanart of Caleb and Essek from Critical Role, in the middle of their conversation on the ninth floor of Caleb's tower in campaign 2 episode 133.

they are close to each other, their darker silhouettes surrounded by the light gray backdrop of the starry dunamantic field, light orange galaxy sprawling behind them. Caleb is dressed in the dark green jacket he wears underneath his heavy winter coat, his dark red hair pulled back into a short ponytail and his pale freckled face clean-shaven; he is standing on the ethereal floor of the chamber. The floor is only distinguishable as a surface by Caleb's posture and feet against it, otherwise it blends seamlessly into the starry space around the characters. Essek, a drow with light lavender skin and short wavy white hair, wearing layered white winter clothes and a long cloak that is trailing behind him and is draped on the floor, is floating right next to Caleb. they're looking at each other, Caleb with a soft face and Essek with a stern and intense expression he had when he said "I'm pretty sure, young man", leaning towards Caleb. there is a bright exploding star in a faraway nebula visible between their faces, and their figures are edged with red and blue chromatic aberration, as if slightly out of focus and dispersing into many infinitesimally different variations of themselves.ALT

‘I carry a lot of sins, like you do.’
'Not anywhere like I do.’
'Don’t be so sure.’
'I’m pretty sure, young man.’

commission for @nyarlie, who requested an illustration of one of the most wizard moments of campaign 2 ever 😏 featuring a clean-shaven dirt wizard, which was very fun to paint! i don’t draw Caleb without his signature scruff often, but he definitely makes such a handsome lad 🀭 this scene is one of my favorite for the way it characterizes both Caleb and Essek, and i was very happy to rewatch it several times as i worked on this painting.

the way i picture the ninth floor of Caleb’s tower (and the space “inside” the beacons) might be a bit unconventional, but i am very much in love with the initial soft gray and starry imagery of dunamancy we had in c2, so it was a special treat for me to be allowed the creative freedom to paint it as such. thank you for commissioning me πŸ’œ

digital fanart of Essek and Verin Thelyss. both of them are drow with white hair and light purple skin; Essek has short wavy hair with the bangs swept to one side, and Verin's longer hair is braided into two french braids. they're sitting in armchairs pushed close together, presumably at a formal party, with Verin leaning over to Essek, shielding his mouth with his hand and whispering something to his brother with a smile. his posing is very laid-back, with his left ankle resting on his right knee, and he's holding a stemless wine glass in his left hand, propping it against his leg. Essek is sitting with his legs crossed, looking at something off in the distance and hiding a small smirk behind his wine glass.

both of them are dressed in fancy dark layered outfits. Essek is wearing a turtleneck, with the sleeves covered with black voluminous embroidered organza; his overshirt has long split sleeves with dull teal embroidered lining and is tied at his waist with a pale sash. he has a large collar/shoulder piece that looks like a fan of thin pearlescent petal-shaped plates with dark copper-red gilded edges. he's also wearing dark pants and high laced boots with metallic tips. his simple rings, bracelets and an ear cuff are all reddish in color.
Verin is wearing a short coat, with split sleeves and another, tighter pair of embroidered silk sleeves underneath; the coat is tied at the waist with a wide layered purple sash. there are dark iridescent decorative pauldrons on his shoulders, reminiscent of seashells or insect carapaces in shape. he has dark pants and dark purple boots on; his jewelry (a pair of triangular bracelets on each arm, a braid ornament of the same shape, and a few small hoop earrings) is gold.

the picture employs a limited palette of various shades of brown, purple, red, teal and lemon yellow.ALT

i’ve been very busy with work recently and haven’t been able to draw much fanart, but i did manage to finish this one today! i’ve wanted to draw Essek and Verin for months, and i also really miss fancy dynasty clothes 🀭

i need mr matthew mercer to explain why essek appears to have such massive beef with astrid, but until he does i will headcanon crack scenarios only

a humorous sketchy comic panel featuring Astrid and Essek from Critical Role. they're sitting down on the floor in comfortable clothing, as if lounging at home. Astrid has a smoking blunt in one of her hands, while Essek is holding a large wine glass up to his mouth. he asks, "Astrid, may I pretend to apprehend and interrogate you if I ever need to impress another party of incompetent adventurers?", to which Astrid responds, "...If I can have Bren's 'Chastity's Nook' loyalty card".ALT
