zmeess does colors

image

here’s a small step-by-step tutorial (?) on my painting process, for the anon interested in how i shade. it’s pretty simple!

  1. sketch/lines
  2. fill in the base colors (i usually go with midtones, i.e. the natural color of the object that is not altered by light, both direct and reflected)
  3. shadows next! use blocky shapes with no blending (yet). a good rule of thumb is if your light is warm, then the shadows should be cool, and visa versa (not always though, who cares about rules it’s art)
  4. now the areas where the light hits the object, and blending the shadows
  5. a little bit more finessing and areas with reflected light (in my case, most of it is teal – because of the background)
  6. ta da! some color corrections and we are done

hope it was helpful! the finished piece is here.
