wingedwoif94:

wingedwoif94:

I’m completely burnt out drawing.

But my family insists that I continue because of the money it was bringing in.

“Everyone has to work, thats just life, you were given a gift, its selfish not to use it! We didn’t get lucky and get a gift like you have so we have to work 80 hours in retail!”

But I used to enjoy drawing and animating. Now it brings me no joy at all. And it was the only hobby I had. Really the only thing I enjoyed aside from hiking and outdoors which I dont have any more because I live in the city.

The more I force myself to do it for money the more it stresses me out. It feels like an obligation. Its making my depression and burnout so much worse.

No matter how much I tell them this they just respond like the quote above…

I guess like… does anyone have experience getting through this kind of burnout? Its been almost a year and I havnt been able to finish almost anything.

I’m surviving off ad revinue from a few old videos and that drops every month. Running out of time.

Forcing it hasnt worked very well.

First and foremost it can be a wise decision to address your concerns to a professional, especially if those close to you lack certain stability to provide advice or insight on your condition. Contact your local doctor perhaps, ask for pointers, and someone you could reach out to specifically believed capable of addressing your concerns, as having somebody who can pay more thorough attention to what may be on your mind could end up rather reassuring in the long run, rather than to run around trying a variety of things that may be addressing only the surface of a more underlying issue.

My advice below is more so theoretical approaches, and I can very well see many of these having been shared with you before, but I nonetheless shall attempt:

I will say that when it comes to burn-out it is often good to take a consistent step back from your usual life, and have a change in perspective and lifestyle for a little even. Burnout may cause you to abandon your tasks, but if not addressed properly, doing nothing may not really equal a break.

If you are looking for small changes, it can often be good to change your medium of self-expression. Art can be a beautiful way of expressing yourself, but if you feel as if you cannot do much outside of your usual, it may feel staggering and exhausting.

Changing up the type of work you do for a while could be really healthy. Been animating for most of your life? Try and do Speedpaints instead. Been only working on your PC? Perhaps try some other ways of approaching art.

Your work may fulfill physical needs such as food and financial security etc., but you as a person need variety, something that is entertaining… I have often felt like the verge of a burn-out came because doing what you do, the way you do it, although it has always worked before, has grown to become exhausting… it may not stay that way, but presently it appears so.

Having family members that are unaware or ignorant of your condition may lead to you feeling guilty, which I doubt will really help you.

Similar to insomnia, it will not be easier to sleep just because you remind yourself that you will have to fall asleep soon or otherwise tomorrow will be even worse…

Sometimes the best we can do is accept our condition for the time being and instead try something else. Accept that you are presently exhausted, grant yourself a break, and grant yourself the kindness to admit that what you are currently doing is not what makes you happy.

If it is fulfilling expectations that scare you, perhaps try and work through that, allow yourself to try new things, and different mediums… make changes to your life, the way you treat yourself, and the way you think of your condition. Do not needlessly punish yourself for being stuck, but rather allow yourself, without guilt, to take a break and do something else.

I have found that shifting the programs I use or the ways I render can be rather creatively refreshing, especially if you stop having a set expectation toward the thing that you produce at the end of the day.

It can weigh a lot on a person to feel as if the thing you used to love is now something that you have no choice but to provide, and it is good to admit to yourself that you feel you can and cannot do things the same way you did before.

Sometimes we need to grant ourselves the freedom of saying “I might never want to do it this way again - I want to do something else and I want to find out if it will make me happier” and perhaps you should devote your break to that exploration of self, for it may leave you feeling happier.

Otherwise, consider visiting a friend. Do you miss being on hikes? Outdoors perhaps? See if you can leave for a bit, perhaps for a couple of weeks, just to breathe some different air and not feel as if the same faces greet you every day, see if it is possible to break the cycle and ask yourself what you feel is missing to make your experience fulfilling. Sometimes what we miss is not even an addition to our concerns, but rather a lack thereof. Sometimes having a lot of projects and plans in your life can feel overwhelming - sometimes striving for a simple goal can relieve your mind.

These are just some first thoughts that come to mind - I have written these whilst rather tired… but the topic of burn-out and how to go about it has been on my mind more frequently and I would not mind opening the discussion for further contemplation.

When you have lived ur entire life without allergies and then suddenly once u hit ur 20s they come rollin in unapologetically

Hey there! I loved your drawing of the sea wolf!

This might be a bit of a weird question, but I was wondering if I could use your art of the sea wolf as a reference in a piece I’m writing, maybe also show the image and link it back to your blog here? It’s, uh…Dracula fanfiction of a sort, lol. The wolves are from the Count’s dream of his past when he summoned the wolves to attack a mother. Anyways, just wanted to ask and make sure first!

I would not mind in the least - a link back would be hella appreciated c:

I always appreciate it if people ask first! Prevents possible difficulties later on

BRO I LOVE YOUR BIG ARCHFEY GOATMAN

Goat solidarity, I've got a d&d goat oc too :D he's smol and has no money but he doing his best and he has 3 eyes

Shqhdhaudjq I love your goat art so much

I love that, thank you so much

Your art is really really beautiful, you have such a solid understanding of characters and anatomy and I really hope to get to where you are one day. It looks like you might’ve gone to school for art (if not, then holy shit /pos), but do you have any favourite tips, techniques, or tools you’d be willing to share? I’ve been doing digital art for years as a hobby but I never really feel confident in what I’m doing lol

I have never gone to art school, no. :0 It’s tough for me to give advice since I have mostly just been scrambling through different art galleries and going “Oh I like that!” and adding it to my style/trying to figure out how people made it work. I would not be able to tell you exactly what it was that ended up helping me out, but I nonetheless will try!

My biggest advice would honestly be to surround yourself with artists, friends, etc., and remind yourself that you are allowed to ask for feedback & constructive criticism if you feel like what you are doing is off but you cannot quite pinpoint why. Getting a second opinion can be a great way of improving on mistakes you didn’t even realize you were making yet!
I would highly recommend joining art serves or reaching out to friends just to check if they could look over your work with you. The advice may not always be what you were looking for, but it could be what you needed at the moment.

Otherwise, I would highly recommend making an active effort to consume artistic media, like a huge variety - books, and social media… take your time to figure out what exactly it is that you would like to be able to do and ask yourself how you think you would like to get there.

Studying photography and always keeping references at hand to study is a good way of exercising a habit when it comes to the shapes you draw.

Just don’t pressure yourself into learning everything at once - even today I have to go “Oh I wanna learn to draw this big thing - but I cannot even draw this very small aspect of it… maybe I should make a study out of each singular aspect.”

Like I think 3 years ago when getting into DnD I just had to remind myself that I have only ever felt comfortable drawing animals and wanted to move past that, with more consistently humanoid characters… and although my results often felt off and are still not perfect today, keeping to it ended up paying off. 3 years in it’s been a blast getting to compare old sketches to recent ones and even just sitting down to redraw an old piece.

Tumblr has a little more writing space for this…

Since I am hella sick and literally cannot sit up long enough to draw atm…

anybody wanna share some of their favorite DnD moments/things with me? Bonus if it has pictures/art

I’ve had a nice time revisiting old sketches of Ipos to see how I would approach them 2-3 years later - it feels nice to self-reflect and acknowledge my own sense of improvement… ;;

gonna just share my results here–

as well as the oldest–

aaand one more that I didn’t get to save to finish it correctly–

All in all its nice to also get to acknowledge how certain scenes were misportrayed due to my own perception/knowledge at the time and fear of leaning too heavily into facial expressions… Idk. I look forward to what the new year brings.

I just wanted to ask, are these ur sketches and drawings

Yes these are my drawings - if anything I post is not my art I will be crediting the artist right with it

Follow up question to thr other person's question. Do you do commissions?

I do Commissions, yes, I am just presently not open for them. However, if you were interested in being notified once I do, I tag people over my discord server for any updates! c: Just gotta add the Commission Ping role in the #role-snatcher and you’ll know once I’m taking Commissions.

The link amongst others is on my carrd: https://awkwardos.carrd.co/

I do not really dare to go too far in regards to concerns on Twitter, but man, having your characters heavily imitated is one thing… but seeing your asexual/aromantic character be heavily referenced and then seeing just full-on heavy NSFW art of them feels like a whole new level of uncomfortable.

I tend to be rather lenient and I think I have gone past the phase of pointing it out if people’s characters resemble my own a bit “too” much, but when I notice it I know I still feel icky about it.

Like I know it is unavoidable, it’s a thing people go through, and it’s a thing that especially a lot of younger artists do without paying much mind to it, I don’t even mind if a piece is used for reference and they don’t think to mention it… but man with especially characters… I just know it irks me.

I just felt like putting my thoughts somewhere, Idk if people read these but hey its Tumblr why not.

Because not too many people follow me on here compared to other sites I just feel a bit safer talking about it tbh.

Like I really like sharing my work, I always did. Positive feedback absolutely delights me and makes my day…

But I am definitely realizing that some of the more vile ways that people speak online and the way that characters are very blatantly often taken without any concern for the creator definitely get to me sometimes.

I have very few characters I actually use actively, and man what happens to them can get hella personal for me.

I feel like even just now some of the most major characters of mine I regret ever having shared online due to some of the things I saw people say and do in response to and with them.

Might just be me wanting to defend the respective personality of those characters, but fuck sometimes it can leave me feeling really icky for a good while.

You wake up to find that all of your art’s eyes are off-center and weirdly shaped.

I have been rambling a lot - have some gore instead

She is off to crown herself a queen

crane-legs:

Oml yeah tho

When your goat son dislikes you for no good reason tbh

I discovered you not long ago and you’ve become a huge inspiration, your passion for art really shows and in turn it makes me love art even more, though I wanted to ask you if you had any resources that you could share for learning how to draw gore? I’d love to improve on it but I find myself stumped as to where I can start, how to look for references, where to seek tutorials and that sort of thing

Oh hello! So very glad to hear you enjoy my work <3

In regards to gore I would always heavily recommend medical books, looking up muscle anatomy and especially making sure to get a larger variety of angles for those is usually good. Otherwise, there are also 3D models of anatomy breakdowns that can be found online and might help create a better understanding of how everything is intertwined, from bone to muscle to skin c:

For gore texture I tend to look up raw meat as a reference, since looking up raw gore alone can often be a bit too messy and make it difficult to figure out the layers that make the muscles work - usually good to go gut first blood after, if you want to do something more detailed… :‘0

I have found that with muscle-on-bone drawings its especially good to have the skeleton drawn out first and add the muscle/flesh on top so that you don’t change the shapes too much as you render

can you tell us a bit about your cat oc Seth? I absolutely love that smug kitty :>

Hmm could not tell you much of her, she was originally planned for a DnD game that I ended up leaving, so now I am just letting her rest in my folders for a bit while I figure out what I wanna do with her uvu

I love your interpretations of dnd races <3! but also wanted to ask what's your artistic take on goblinoids?

Hmm I honestly have not worked with goblinoids too much- the closest I could think of is Firbolg, and I can definitely give them a similar treatment that I gave them…

I never really cared for “ugly traits” in DnD races, like you could take any described feature and do something more interesting with it. With Goblinoids I feel like their “exaggerated” features could rather be translated into more bestial visuals perhaps? Lots of potential.. I could see their exaggerated expressions even leaning a little feline if I had to take my own swing at it.

Never managed to post these recent redraws of DnD NPCs from like 2020/2021

definitely feel as if I’ve gotten more comfortable with colors the past couple of years - although my linework has gotten a bit more indecisive

I saw your answer to a person asking about if you went to art school, and your answer got me wondering if you had any anatomy book to recommend, of human anatomy and animal anatomy! Or any other material you recommend, honestly :D

Oof dang I would not quite tbh - I tend to look up a lot online nowadays and I do not recall what the old books were that I grew up with since they had already fallen apart since :‘0

I’d say never underestimate online resources - such things as images on search engines, Pinterest, etc. as well as videos on YT etc. displaying different muscle movements. Research is really your best friend to figure out exactly what it is you are looking for!

However if you are looking for specific books you could add to your own collection, I would highly recommend asking @rema-rin, she keeps surprising me with the books she has on her shelf that just display some very beautiful ways of going about rendering, etc.

Perhaps she has a few books she could recommend regarding anatomy!

I don't know if you make tutorials but could you possible give a guide on how you do humanoid faces, if not thats cool. Love your art ❤️

I would shamelessly admit I have no idea, but also I get that answer may not be as helpful - I feel I still have a long way to go regarding human art especially…

I have found breaking down the shapes that makes up a human face is something I have been starting to increasingly appreciate, especially when it comes to drawing more complex facial expressions!

Tried to show how I usually go about faces, perhaps it will help! But otherwise its always good to try and look at photography and video references! ;;

Having flashbacks to the time I was 12 and my teacher looked at my sketchbook, thinking it was a good time to ask me if I was a sadist.

Like, lady, I am scared to hug people too tightly cuz I worry I might hurt them-

Do you have any art guides/books you would recommend?

rema-rin:

There’s a lot out there on very specific subjects, so I’d first recommend sitting down and breaking down what it is exactly you’re wanting to focus on into smaller subjects - anatomy? proportions? sketching itself? - color, environments, composition, rendering- you name it and chances are someone has made a book on it.

Like, I could tell you “How to render” - by Scott Robertson, was very impactful in helping me understand how vital light and texture-rendering can be in terms of how shadows look - but if you don’t feel ready to tackle realistic rendering yet - or hell, aren’t planning on trying realistic styles in the first place, but more so wanting to specialize in more stylized and cartoony art - then that wouldn’t be a very useful recommendation for your journey at this stage.

If you aren’t sure what may be out there, I’d recommend watching stuff like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nZHU91rRkFQ

And tbh, I’d, in general, recommend Proko’s whole series “asking the pros” - there are a bunch of videos of him going around asking professional artists different kinds of questions and topics - it might help you get a better idea of how methodical this whole vague concept of “getting better at art” can actually be!

I am having way too many “meet a new person, have one fun conversation, tell yourself you’d like to talk to them more, and then phase out for several months without talking to them” moments

FUckin- took allergy meds in the middle of my day and now my rhythm is all scrambled cuz I underestimated them and they knocked me out

what year is it

Get to play in a Oneshot and did the art for all the party members, very much looking forward to it.

Due to the recent DnD stuff going on, a few friends are trying out new TTRPG systems, so that will be interesting :‘0

Been spending a lot of time lately knowing I wanna change up my art style and thus staring very intently at all the art on my feed trying to figure out what I like

My first mistake was thinking I didn’t need this anymore

Like I know I wanna do more higher contrast black and white renders, right?

but also for quick sketches, I gotta actually do line art and not just- blocks that I need to adjust… and my standard brushes are bothering me

and the looser sketching just also feels off

like fuck the soft lines I wanna go

crisp

but also not too thin… but also thin is nice… but fuck-

But what if… right… mask of many faces

I wanna put this here as a stand-alone post cuz when u-
